I am making an experiment with the image I am working on. I've been shooting this part of the sky for three nights so far, and I wanted to compare the results. The image on the left is stacked from material from the first night only, 1 hour of integration time […] [Original post on fedi.stfn.pl]

A cautionary tale sometimes told about post-Roman Britain is that ceramic manufacture disappeared entirely along with the departing Romans. This is an exaggeration but it does seem that the industry simplified and localized. What similar tales might be told of our own future?

Looking at the mass of high-tech manufactured products around my home and farm, I find a lot of reasons to be fearful about this. Perhaps we should get simplifying and localizing fast. As we head back unavoidably to the world of the local workshop, what's clear is that there won't be anything like the modern petrol or diesel car in it, still less electric vehicles, driverless cars and all the rest. But there may be a lot of useful stuff that local workshops and technicians can turn out with whatever energy they can muster, repurposing and catabolizing what's to hand from the prodigious material remnants of the dying high-energy economy.

It may be a tiny thing, but it shows the beauty of Linux. The "Never show again" button. It means that the people who created this popup actually respect users' decisions. It's not like the other apps or systems, where the only options are "ok" or "remind me later", which is no choice at all.
