Easiest on the pocket laureate since Ishiguro. Now just the small matter of reading him.

This Hallowe’en season, I’m finally reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It’s a far cry from the Ladybird version I (vaguely) remember reading as a child. 🙂

The new remaindered table at my main Waterstone’s. It’s NYRB heavy, and spoke to me.

Almost booked tickets to a weekend horror event before realising that, as far as I can tell, there’s no public transport to it. A local event for local people.

Slow as ever to catch up on films, but I really enjoyed Vivariun (2019). Like an extended Twilight Zone without Rod Serling popping up to explain it. Woof woof! #horrorsky #moviesky #horror

A pleasant afternoon tasting beers at Epochal as part of their festive drop-in. Cool to see their Burton Union system in place (real heritage there!) Nice setting by a canal. (And it was light when I went in.)

This review of Mark Z. Danielewski’s ‘House of Leaves’ amused me. Guy seems to think the varied styles are some sort of scam.

When did libraries give up the ‘Quiet, please!’ mentality and adopt an acoustic singalong? Went to local for peace to write and now folk are blasting out Scott McKenzie’s ‘If you’re going to San Francisco.’, which I’m not. 🤷‍♂️

Just finished reading Trilogy by Jon Fosse Three historical novellas (2007, 2012, and 2014) exploring the circularity of life and the trappings of fate as young lovers Asle and Alida search for a place to call home. Definitely works better as a whole. #books #nobelprizeinliterature #justread

The Book of Mormon is coming to Glasgow. Been wanting to see it for a while. Rather cool to see a theatre booking tool offer a photo of the view from the seat. New one on me.

First film of 2024 that I liked #filmsky was ‘How to Have Sex’, watched on 1st Jan. [Favourite of whole year (so far) was The Substance]

‘Lucan’, the documentary currently on BBC iPlayer about the son of the murdered nanny looking for Lucan goes to some random places. More a study of one man’s later life consumed by a need to locate the missing lord. Lots of side dramas, its own mystery, and a completely left field conclusion.

I can understand books fetching a hefty price, but £130 markup on eBay for a book that you can still get from the publisher for £50. Not even a sub-25 numbering. 🤷‍♂️

Glad Samantha Harvey’s Orbital has won the Booker. Although it’s the only one from the long list that I read, I really enjoyed it. (And it means I need not bother with the others I had in reserve. 🙂).

I’ve never read Will Self (though I do have his The Book of Dave on the shelves) but this review convinces me I’m not missing out.

Recently picked up this tribute to JG Ballard (published by @titanbooks.bsky.social) A good mix of names, though it makes me feel I should read more Ballard first.

Some of the better movies I’ve watched over the holiday period. Possum was a cross between Spider and Babadook Coherence was especially good given its tiny budget. Amazed I’d never heard of it before, but I suppose that’s why things like ‘the best sci-fi you’ve never heard of’ get bandied about.

The missus and I saw Wicked the other night in Edinburgh. Good show and I was happy to leave it at that. Sadly she’s bought the soundtrack and now I fear it’s on repeat forever.

Although I’m nowhere near finishing the book, I risked it being spoiled and went to see the movie last night. No regrets. An absolutely stunning visual experience and a stripped down version of the novel that hones in on a core plot line and ignores many a subplot. Recommended.

Around 15 years ago, on a much-missed book forum, @itsalkitching.bsky.social introduced me to The Unthanks (or Rachel Unthank & the Winterset, as they were then). I’ve seen them many times since. Tonight, in Edinburgh, is unlucky number thirteen. Though having to go to Paisley was more unlucky, tbh.

Found out today that the movie is finally being released in UK later this month. Been wanting to see it for a while, but not allowing myself to see it until I’ve read the book…all 900 pages!

Booker Prize announcement coming soon. The only book I read was Jonathan Escoffery’s “If I Survive You”. I liked it. But only chat I see about it is that it’s interconnected short stories rather than a potential winner. Sort of hope it wins so I don’t feel a need to prioritise another title. 😃
