Milwaukeean by birth, Kiwi by choice, progressive always. Believer in the power of the editorial cartoon. I used to chef. Now I hang out with my wife, play punk rock guitar, umpire New Zealand baseball, and play with my deaf dog.

Agreed. A coalition centred around Labour and the Greens could have some really positive outcomes. Also, folks don’t look at me so funny anymore when I tell them my party vote will be Greens.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve been able to use public transport, and I forgot how much I enjoy it. Faster, cheaper, easier than driving. Build more of this instead of roads. #NZPol

I've got a mate who's a pilot for Air New Zealand. He laughed long and hard at the original story here. Someone please tell Tommy that pilots around the world do this sort of stuff all the time as code to friends of theirs who are also flying at that time.

It would be one thing if the economy was good and small venues could live on their own right now. Rising tide and all that. But that's not the case. Folks can't afford to go out as much. So why not help more places that host $10, $15, $20 shows instead of the $200 gigs most can't afford anyway? 2/2

Here's what really burns my toast. I play music in small venues that are hurting. Some are closing. These shiny stadium gigs are fine if they make financial success organically. This crap does nothing for the local music scene; it actually harms it by taking that $ away from Kiwi artists. 1/2 #NZPol

It's fucking criminal, that's what it is. Two more measles deaths in Pennsylvania this week. I say this constantly about ... everything, but I really have a hard time visualising how the US recovers from all this for a very, very long time.

I was a journalist for about 15 years until the turn of the century, including covering the MN state house. If the governor tried this with one of us everyone would have threatened to walk out. (Wait, the governor did try to ban me from his press conferences, and that's what everyone did. He caved.)

I sometimes, just for shits and giggles, I ask Claude and ChatGPT the same question to see if they give different answers (usually they do). In this case, ChatGPT got it right and Claude got it wrong, but it qualified its answer.

I get inflation and all that, but around 1970 when I was losing teeth I used to get a quarter. That would be $2.16 today. Seems like something went haywire somewhere.

I subscribe to an awful lot of online publications (don't believe me, ask my wife). My frustration is with links to publications I'd never subscribe to normally. I with they'd have a way to read one article — maybe pay 50 cents or something. I'd be happy to do that. (WSJ leaps immediately to mind.)

In the late '80s I was Night Editor at The Minnesota Daily. Me and one other guy, sometime between 10pm and 2am, read and checked every word of the newspaper before the negatives were shot, plates were made, and the paper went to the printer. This was a COLLEGE NEWSPAPER. Not hard.

This was my Little Buddy’s school lunch today (it’s pizza bread in case you can’t tell from looking at it). He says it tasted as gross as it looks; one bite and it went in the bin. Please ask David Seymour if $3.50 each is a good deal if most of the lunches wind up in the compost. #NZPol
