It's not Friday, but I wanted to share the 1st page of a full rewrite of a pilot spec I only recently realized I had just written the wrong story for these characters. I loved the world and people, not the story, so I'm starting again. This is the intro to two of the major characters. #scriptsky

Ext. the kentmore home - day

The Kentmore family home is a sprawling estate, with a large dozen-ish-bedrooms mansion and a circular driveway with one of those fountains in the middle of it, with a spitting cherub.

A late-model sensible sedan rounds the driveway and parks in front of the home.

Out of the driver side steps SAM KENTMORE (33), whip-smart, a little nerdy, determined. She looks up at the house and sighs.

She collects herself a moment. Then forces her face into a scrunch, like a sob. Then shakes it off, tries again, a little different. Shakes it off, nods to herself, and walks up to the door.

She rings the doorbell.

The door opens, and CHARLES KENTMORE IV (65), black hair perfectly coiffed and gray at the temples, the tan of a rich white man in wine country, is the one who opened it. He looks pleased but surprised to see Sam.

CHARLES
Sweet pea. Hi.

Charles looks past Sam, nervously.

SAM
Mom's not here.

Charles is relieved.

CHARLES
Come in, come in.

He steps aside and Sam enters. Charles takes one more look around, for good measure.

INT. THE KENTMORE HOME - CONTINUOUS

Charles shuts the door.

CHARLES
To what do I owe the pleasure?

Sam is about to speak. But instead she bursts into tears. Charles is clearly not equipped for this. He reaches as if to hug her, but isn't really sure how. She just stands there. Weeping.

no matter what I do with this series pilot screenplay, it feels like "not enough happens"... of course, I'm introducing like 12 character and two season-long story arcs, plus wrapping a small version of one of them, all in 30-ish pages. Maybe this is why writing spec pilots isn't more popular.

Nah you're 100% right. Like I said... my need to try to rationalize others' behavior is a character flaw of mine. It's like... I think it's me being "nice" or "reasonable" but it just ends up excusing shitty behavior. Your take on this is spot on.

Yeah so this seems like some lacking user education... are they supposed to judge the quality of the logline? Or the idea? Because it can't really be both unless there are two axes/ratings to give.

I hadn't written it off as a failure, per se, but just like "I'm done with this, want to write something completely different." Then this one started nagging at me. I was protecting the protagonist; now he's abusing alcohol to cope, and lying to everyone. So maybe I just needed to stop protecting.

It's all of it unconstructive, but for some reason I am particularly annoyed by the "Meh" rating... like, if you're gonna hate on something, do it ten toes down. But yeah I had to stop using Logjam, it just doesn't provide anything helpful, IMO.

So the old adage of stepping away from your work to keep moving forward is true, it seems. I'd never actually tried it before. And I feel like you can't fake it... I'd not only not thought about this script for a few weeks, I had actively told myself it was permanently shelved. Wild.

I find the process of writing a series pilot so interesting compared to a feature. Like I *can't* wrap up all the threads or pay off all the setups, but I have to let the reader in on what *might* be coming. Very different. #scriptsky

INT. RESIDUAL SUGAR - DAY

Residual Sugar is a mid-scale wine bar, the kind of place that locals hang out and wine industry people call a second home.

Behind the bar is LAUREN GALLAGHER (33), short hair, tattoos, a gorgeous smile she generally withholds. She's cleaning stemware.

Wiping down tables nearby is VAL GARCIA (22), Latina, her black hair pulled back into a high ponytail. She's focused.

The bell above the door rings and in walks JAKE WALTERMEYER (29), handsome, strong jaw, great hair, and a friendly smile. Lauren looks up, then back to what she's doing.

LAUREN
Hey, New Guy. Back so soon?

Jake sits at a stool in front of Lauren, who smiles without looking up at him.

JAKE
Got any more of that white wine from last night? Riddling?

Lauren looks down near her feet at a refrigerator. She grabs a bottle, then a glass, and pours Jake a glass of Riesling.

He takes the glass and sips, as the bell above the door rings once more. A TOURIST COUPLE walks in. Looking up, Lauren smiles at them, but there is something forced about it.

LAUREN
Welcome in! What can I getcha?

TOURIST MAN
What's the oldest vintage of Kentmore Estates you have by the glass?

Lauren gives an exaggerated pout.

LAUREN
Sorry, we only serve fine wine.

Jake almost chokes on his sip, the tourists look confused. Lauren continues before they can respond.

When I post about my screenwriting journey on bsky, I get a few likes from obviously real people, other writers, just like, "hey pal. Nice. We see you." That's good. Same content on Threads gets me a half-dozen people (bots?) offering beta reader and editing services. That's bad.

The first screenplay I ever finished got an 8 on the Black List, a semifinal finish at Fade In, and a 2nd-round finish at AFF. And I'm happily shelving it indefinitely. It's not actually the kind of story I want to write. But still. Feels good for a first stab. #scriptsky

It's been a couple months since I "finished" anything new, but after spending ~2 weeks on a series bible, I just wrapped the first draft of a series pilot, a single-cam comedy set in Napa Valley about a tiny town and its community theater. Really enjoying the format! #scriptsky

I think getting a Black List eval with an 8 Overall on my first screenplay, just months after deciding to start writing screenplays, was actually detrimental to my growth over the months since. I have so much to learn, so many reps to still get in. I actually considered querying this Fall! Ha!
