Yeah, round here there were v mild protests with signs, and student spokespeople saying "Our Lycee is good and we're happy, we're protesting in solidarity with students w/o same facilities." But then 40-50 out of towners arrived and tried kicking off — so real protestors just went back into Lycee

Yeah, so these are just data for hospital tests, only catching people who are seriously ill with it — and is seen as just hinting at the scale of infection in wider population. In France they also do wastewater testing and it shows a big wave right now, and is likely similar in UK.

It's the next covid wave, predictably after return to school/work from hols as happens every year. Yet the gov still treats it as a seasonal winter virus like flu when scheduling vaccinations. Drives me spare. ukhsa-dashboard.data.gov.uk/respiratory-... ukhsa-dashboard.data.gov.uk/respiratory-...

Well, the Sunday Times is a business but has been loss-making for decades — so seems a prime place to slash costs by firing second-rate columnists, to awaken capitalism from its slumber

Just finished Thérèse Raquin as part of immersing myself a bit more into French culture. Blimey. Zola's probably not the godfather of cosy crime.

I can't imagine what it must have been like to live through it. I recently went to Saint Nazaire to follow through the steps of the St Nazaire raid, operation chariot. Astounding, the things people did in these terrible circumstances.

I remember back in the day when I was a journalist, receiving a press release from 'Consumers for Health Choice' purporting to be a grassroots campaign against moves to regulate vitamin companies. I checked out the group and it shared an office with a PR co for vitamin co's.

There's a nice hybrid available now - Statamic - which gives you the performance of a static site, and having the content in markdown files in git, but with the power of a CMS so non-techy people can update it.

By co-incidence I'm reviewing a set of published accounts today that are much much smaller scale, but the audit firm has waved them through despite containing basic errors and absolute bullshit that I was able to prove wrong with a simple check despite no letters after my name

Dreamt last night about going out to dinner with some writer friends. We got to the restaurant and asked for 6 tables for 1, then each went to our own table and had dinner 'together' around the same dining room while quietly reading books... and I think this should be a thing 😂

I've seen a few examples of techbro marketing recently where I'm pretty sure typos were inserted deliberately, in simple words early on in the post — with the intention of suggesting the post was not AI, when it clearly was.

And yet the BBC has dampened the language from 'hacked' to 'meddled'. Hmmm. Is it only 'hacked' when teenagers do it wearing hoodies?

will say it again: the most effective way to curb far right agitators like Lowe, "Tommo" et. al. would be to stop their ability to earn money for it from social media or live streaming. So much of it is grifting for revenue, not attention.

The claim against him is based solely on extremists claiming to have fed his work into an online AI detection tester. These tools are notoriously unreliable. The BBC should not be amplifying such feeble accusations, which may well have racist intent as well as political.

Yes, and also that the Murdochs' empire owned the production company for a while, having bought it to hold the BBC to ransom over renewing its success — and of course to then take it away. But they no longer own it, so the cleansing can begin in style with Nigella!
