My other half bought me a first edition for my 40th. Best birthday present I have ever had. Amazing book, a timelessly fantastic grasp of delusional young men and their bravado. Great film, too.

Midge Ure in-studio on Jonesy's Jukebox!

Done by the Rollers’ production team of Phil Coulter, Bill Martin and their session chaps. Midge Ure more or less disowned it as the only thing of him on it was his vocals. Went to no.1, though.

This is what the front page of a newspaper should look like
Observer front page headline: ‘The return of the public execution’ with black-and-white photograph of a crowd watching America’s last public hanging in 1936

Here is a terrible photo of an amazing gig. If there is anyone at 73 who delivers a better and more-consistent live show than Robyn Hitchcock, let me know. Ended with a solo strolling a cappella cover of Day In The Life up and down the aisles of the Union Chapel.

Certainly one of the best interviewees in my 35 years of hackery. A thoroughly decent fella and a big old brain on him too.

I remember the old 70s disaster movies - Towering Inferno comes to mind - where there was always someone that was destined for a horrible ending because they were such a massive arse. Even in a take-your-pick age of wankers, there are a few very strong contenders.

They never tire of bashing the young, even dressing it up as legitimate concerns ™️. Absolutely devoid of empathy or compassion.

Seen them a few times over the past couple of years. Viv and Ellen have been fantastic additions. One of the unsung greats, these, love their longevity. And such a fine body of work.

Whenever I see them I just think ‘Coventry City FC’ blue, circa 1977/78. I suppose racism was having a moment back then, too.

I know. 'Give cancer a kicking' etc. 'You got this' blah blah. It's all slogans that stave off reality. My mum's been living with cancer for years now. She says half the battle is dealing with people who don't know how to behave around it.

Steve Morgan @stevemorgan68.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I find it quite baffling. But then life has always seemed like that to me. I've looked at it for 58 years now and still don't know what it is I'm seeing. But I do find the passive, reverent language people use to creep around death so jarring against the constant tide of misery in the news.

Or at least that's what I've been told by a couple of people I know in some serious chats about illness/cancer/shit stuff

I think sometimes people are frightened to be themselves around bad news. They lurch into an imagined protocol - the thing they think they have to do or say, when it can be so much better if you speak from the heart - even if you say the 'wrong' thing it comes over as more human.

God, how I hate that phrase. Like the dread ‘thoughts and prayers’ it’s a coping shrug of the shoulders in some sort of mad denial of how brutal life gets

I didn't pick up on them then, as I was only about 12 or 13. But they're as good as anything else from that time, I'd say. I love the fact that they were so shortlived, too. Makes it all the more interesting. Here for a good time, not a long time!

Steve Morgan @stevemorgan68.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Aw, that's a shocker. I've not had real first-hand experience, but I've heard many tales from friends of mums and dads; a friend of my partner's has recently been diagnosed with early onset, and the signs are visible. It's such a tough thing to approach watching someone change like that. x
010
Steve Morgan @stevemorgan68.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
It's the new approach. It has been decided. The plunger is in place, open your throat to it. And people just parrot back what they're told, because no-one wants to have to think because that's too hard. Anyway, Traitors etc etc.

I know Suburban Lawns crop up now and again when cult acts are concerned, but there is never a bad time to watch the Su Tissue 'look' on this. What an extraordinary, shortlived band. So crunchy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyiL...

We were young and excitable. I love Killing Joke, but I hated that venue. Seen it butcher (see what I did there?) so many good acts.

Fantastic live act back then - not seen them for an age. I can remember seeing them in my first year away in Sheffield - we saw Killing Joke at The Octagon (terrible sound, as ever, there) and then legged it in a taxi down to The Leadmill just in time for these. Cor, that sounds so mad now.

God, so many bone-chilling scenes - this sequence is right up at the top - that and the one with Grady in the loo. Talking of scary hotels, I just watched The Beyond, a 1981 giallo, another tale of a hotel with a very nasty secret. Sadly, not in Kubrick's class, but a decent blob of ketchup,
