I agree that a glorified autocomplete shouldn’t be expected to count like a five-year-old, but is it unfair to criticize it for describing a garbage answer as “the correct breakdown” instead of expecting it to not answer and explain that it shouldn’t be trusted to do things it can’t do?

Part of the explanation is that these percentiles are among all people, not just employed people. In the 70s, over half of women earned $0/year. The “drop“ in large part reflects that there is no longer a huge unemployed group (women) that any salary will exceed. Men have become less privileged.
