An excellent evening listening to @imcmillan.bsky.social talking about his new collection of poems “Red River Valley”. Talked Barnsley v Grimsby and then he also very kindly signed my copy of “Under The Volcano” from the brilliant @backlisted.bsky.social episode. The best type of evening 😊
Ian McMillan reading from and about his new collection of poems “Red River Valley” at the Central Library in Manchester. Part of the Manchester Literature Festival 2026.Ian kindly signed my book, I then asked him to sign my recently purchased copy of “Under The Volcano”by Malcolm Lowry, subject of an episode of the consistently excellent Backlisted podcast series. Thanks IanAnd still time for a pint.

Just seen an excellent gig at Gullivers in Manchester. The Loft with support from Alta Zuma. A great night. Just reviewing the merch before the train home.

I bought three Vintage Penguins from Waterstones in Leeds, lovely things to own - and these are all @backlisted.bsky.social picks. Additional photo from the other place.
Three books from both the Waterstones’ Vintage Penguin range and the Backlisted podcast range. The Horse’s Mouth by Joyce Cary, Riceyman Steps by Arnold Bennett and Hemlock and After by Angus Wilson.A photo of Leeds Waterstones’ excellent Vintage Penguin display taken by Ben Williams (photo from the other place).

Just finished this The Horse’s Mouth by Joyce Cary, a book I would never have heard of without @backlisted.bsky.social. I listened to the episode again (+Max Porter) when I was about halfway through. A quite brilliant read - the language, the humour and the character that is Gulley Jimson.
An original Penguin edition of The Horse’s Mouth by Joyce Cary on a table in a pub in Timperley. The end of 375 pages of said book.

Just sitting down to the Observer’s review of books on a Monday evening….. Woah! Ain’t nothing like the real thing. @iammilliam.bsky.social
A photo of the Observer fiction preview from yesterday on a table in a pub. The headline of the piece is The Year of Reading Dangerously. Which is the title of….…..this excellent book by Andy Miller.

Happy New Year GC How about “Monday Morning 5.19” by Rialto. A wonderful song with slightly depressing connotations 😀 Or “Sweet Thursday” by Icicle Works, hidden gem of an album track.

My reading these days is 50% Backlisted inspired - the books themselves or a recommendation on Locklisted. Coincidentally this came to the top of the pile two weeks ago. A quite wonderful read! And as it turned out, I finished it 10 years to the day after the first show. @backlisted.bsky.social
The novel A Month in the Country by JL Carr, strategically placed with a Christmas menu and a pint of Plum Pudding in downtown Timperley.

Did a search on the Franks and found your feed, been laughing my head off! (I’ve seen them a few times, my Christmas treat this year is a weekend in Cork for their annual homecoming gig)

Caught up the Shelagh Delaney episode of @backlisted.bsky.social today - a wonderful listen (still getting over the ITV interview 😮) This podcast is consistently excellent - warmth and wisdom and such breadth. The accompanying Locklisted pod (via Patreon) is a bi-weekly treat. Thank you 🙏
