www.derekthompson.org/p/the-death-... Interesting stuff! It surprised me to see that the average child care done by dads is still only at ~70 minutes per day for millennials. That's what, taking kids to school and making breakfast? That leaves a ton on mom's plate.

Here’s a stream on Hecate island. I’m not sure if people have been here before. It’s remote, difficult to access, and very beautiful. We saw wolf tracks, grouse, very old and pristine bogs, and some of the gnarliest, toughest, wiry trees I’ve ever had to hike through 51.66409° N, 128.04106° W

Here’s a nice little spot in the watershed closest to our facility on Calvert Island. We have a stream-flow monitoring system right behind this frame, which is triggered by a weather station higher in the watershed.

Approaching our Ethel Island weather and radio station. This is the very south tip of the island. It’s currently surrounded by kelp, but a very steep drop off makes going ashore easier than it looks. Today we calibrated the rain gauge, fixed a camera, and added a voltage splitter

Ever wondered how a rain gauge is calibrated? Here we’re draining a known volume of pure rain water through a gauge and recording the results of how the water passes through. The results can be used to make future rain measurements more accurate. We do it twice in a row, at least 10 minutes apart

A school of anchovies (I think), probably feeding near Hakai’s dock in Pruth Bay, Calvert Island. There were several schools, and one was visible shining and flashing under the pier from the dock to shore in a very wide shoal. You could see the water rippling and the fish shimmering

Working on BASIC code from 11 years ago that runs on real mechanical equipment in a remote coastal watershed will make you realize LLMs are still pretty useless in many contexts, and programming/debugging are still alive and well outside of the beaten paths

One undeniable thing about LLMs that I can’t wrap my head around is that for the first time, we have digital systems with truly complex emergent behaviours. Not like system dynamics in the computing context, but action-oriented behaviours or constructs like j space. Absolutely bizarre

Well, incredibly enough, some awesome guy named Jules spotted my bike and tipped me off by text, so I ran over to where he saw it (only ~6 blocks from my office!) and I recovered it! Uncomfortable confrontation with the thief for sure, but I'll take it. What a relief. Here's to another 12000km!

Rill is awesome. I've started storing parquet from all over in S3 so I can look at it with Rill and stop jumping around the web, CLIs, using different DSLs to query things, etc. It's great at making AWS CE's data palatable. Just set up a routine CUR export and bob's your chopped unc

I just realized I’m like the human version of a quantized model. I might seem kind of smart or capable sometimes but when you really get down to it, there’s a lot missing. I’m a passable solution for simple tasks, though. I’m also less expensive than real smart people
