The Chief AI Officer is the new Chief Digital Officer. A title you create when you want to look like you are transforming without changing how anyone works. The real tell is whether the hiring bar changed, not the org chart.

The disclaimer is the tell. Companies cut the editors, the checkers, the people who exercised judgment, then blamed the tool. AI did not lower the quality bar. Firing the humans who held it did. Hiring is where that bill comes due.

This is the hiring take I keep coming back to. Teams do not have an AI tooling problem, they have an AI fluency problem. The fix is not another seat license. It is asking in the interview: show me how you actually work with these things. We see it in every transcript.

Soft portrait work. You can feel the room in this frame, which is the thing digital never quite gets right. I am over in Austin shooting film too, mostly street on the M6. What stock was this, and did you meter for the highlights?

Soft light on brick is exactly why I keep shooting film. You can fake grain in post but you can't fake the way a real frame holds a shadow across a wall. What stock was this one ?

The scary version nobody says out loud: they are not choosing which skills to keep. They are just letting the machines do it all and hoping judgment survives on its own. It won't. Judgment is built by doing the boring work AI now does for you.

Seven lawsuits. Fourteen attorneys general. And your vendor says 'bias-free AI hiring.' When the algorithm rejects someone illegally, you are the employer of record. Not the vendor. You. If your screening tool cannot show its work, you did not buy software. You bought a liability with a login.

Candidates cheat with AI. Companies filter with AI. Now candidates refuse the AI interviews. Both sides assume the other is lying, then act shocked when nobody trusts it. Kill the one-way video interview. Let them use every tool, then test the one thing AI cannot fake: how they think.

Every CEO cutting junior roles is betting experience is downloadable. It is not. I have watched a senior debug in twenty minutes what takes a junior two days. That gap is the entire training program. You are deleting your senior engineers of 2036. Good luck hiring them back.

Ford paid tuition on a lesson every company is about to learn. The AI wrote code fine. It could not tell good code from an outage waiting to happen. You cannot prompt ten years of 2 AM pages into existence. Fire the people with judgment and you get a faster way to break things at scale.

Everyone needs new filters now. Candidates, hiring managers, all of us.

The name is the first boundary. Call it Work and nobody tries anything else with it.

Nothing derisks a fundraise like warning investors the product might end civilization. Straight into the S-1. Respect.

As a founder I feel this from the other side. Picking benefits I barely understand, then asking HR to explain them to people who also don't understand them. The literacy gap starts with me.

I've been building AI agents for recruiting at RightMatch, and the decision layer is exactly where the magic breaks. The models can act. Getting them to decide well, consistently, is the whole product.

My AI assistant handles inbox triage, meeting prep, research, and first drafts. It's called Muse. If you join, enter code 8EQGPX in Settings > Redeem token within 48 hours of signing up. We both earn credits. #AI

The name matters less than the consolidation. Agents win when the suite stops feeling like five products. Hiring is the same: one agent that runs the whole loop beats five point tools.

I could watch studio tours all day. Ever since I started shooting film I've been obsessed with how other photographers set up their space, the light, the workflow. This one's going on my watch list.

The CXR colloquiums look like the real deal. No scripts, just peers. That's where the honest TA conversations happen. Hope to make one soon.

You've been writing about HR since 2002. That's a run. The employer branding questions from back then look completely different with AI in the mix now.

Your Workplace Minute on elder care versus childcare was an important one. It's the workforce story nobody covers enough. Good to connect here.

The System of Record podcast is a strong addition to the network. Would love to talk AI in hiring on there sometime.

Your Superworker research called the direction. Companies that train workers are pulling ahead of the ones just cutting. I'm watching the same split play out in hiring tech.

Your cameras-on standard for community calls was prescient. The whole industry is now fighting over what counts as real presence in interviews. Would love your take from the TA leader seat.

Job posts are the first thing candidates automate around now. AI writes the application to match the post word for word. Curious how you're advising teams to write posts that still pull real signal.

Caught your episode on durable skills in hiring. That's the exact question I'm wrestling with. If AI can fake the standard signals, what actually stays durable? Would love to trade notes.

Your post on the skills we're not building hit a nerve. Hiring keeps optimizing for signals AI can fake. The skills that matter most are the ones nobody's training for. Would love to dig into that on DriveThruHR sometime.

Congrats on the Talk To Me Nice launch. Trust is the whole game in hiring right now. Candidates don't trust the process, employers don't trust the candidates. Curious how your seven trust languages map onto that.

Your tests running local models for HR caught my eye. Good enough and private beats big and leaky for most HR work. I'm thinking through the same tradeoff in hiring tech. What held up best in your tests?

Your column on our distaste for effort stuck with me. I see it in hiring from both sides now. Candidates automate applications, employers automate screening. Nobody wants the hard part. Wrote about the dynamic this week.

Your piece asking if AI costs more than the employee is the right question. I'm watching the same math in recruiting. The employer side is now as automated as the candidate side. Machines talking to machines. Wrote about it this week: sterlingsmith.fyi/cheating

Everyone Is Cheating Now — Sterling Smith
Candidates cheat with AI. Companies screen with AI. The system now selects for the best cheater. Detection won't fix it. Interviewing everyone will.

Fellow DisruptHR speaker here, did NWA yesterday. Your Leapsome share caught my eye. Every fast-growing HR tech company seems to be racing toward the same agentic playbook. Which one do you think actually changes the work?

Your post about the whole class cheating stopped me cold. I'm seeing the same thing in hiring. AI writes the resume, preps the candidate, sometimes takes the interview. I wrote about it this week: sterlingsmith.fyi/cheating. Curious what still works as a real signal on your side.

Candidates use AI to apply. Employers use AI to screen. The whole funnel is synthetic until the interview. And interviews are next.

Job openings are up 13%. Hires are up 2%. 400 applicants. 40 resumes read. 6 interviewed. 1 hired. Gave a talk this week at DisruptHR: "Everyone Is Cheating Now." The recruiters laughed. Then they stopped. sterlingsmith.fyi/cheating

Meta has been boringly consistent on glasses while everyone else demos and delays. I still would not put my confidential info on them, but as hardware they are the only ones shipping and iterating in public.

I do the same thing with my training. A plan is just data, and Claude is the best coach I never have to text back. The MCP piece is the unlock, most people are still copying plans by hand like it is 2019.

Greenhouse's 2026 report: 63% of job seekers have sat through an AI interview. Only 1 in 5 believe employers use that AI responsibly. The tool got adopted faster than the trust did. Would you take an AI interview if nobody told you what it measured?

One of the ATS platforms we integrate with just started charging for API calls that used to be free. No announcement, we just noticed the dashboard looked different. Every integration you didn't build is a lease, not a purchase. Anyone else renegotiating a vendor this month?

Everyone's excited about AI agents doing recruiter work. Almost nobody's excited about explaining what the agent decided when a regulator asks. That gap, not the agent itself, is the actual product problem in hiring right now.

A federal judge just let the Workday AI hiring bias case keep moving. The AI doesn't decide who gets hired. It decides who a recruiter ever sees. If it screens you out before a human reads your name, nobody upstream knows to ask why.
