LA's Cosmic Joke play hardcore like it's pop-punk, taking cues from their melodic '80s SoCal forebears. They impressed us with their 2024 debut LP and last year's guest-heavy covers EP for wildfire relief, and word is, they've got a whole 'nother album of that stuff ready to go. In November, Cosmic Joke will release _Suburban Decay_ , comprising 12 more snotty singalongs of Descendents/Adolescents vintage. One of them, "No Threat," is available today. If you want to bop around joyfully/angrily for just shy of two minutes while enjoying some tremendous walking basslines and a hearty breakdown that doesn't skimp on the pop appeal, this tune's for you. Listen below. The post Cosmic Joke Announce New Album Suburban Decay: Hear “No Threat” appeared first on Stereogum.

Girl groups, like boy bands, have a limited lifespan: Their dissolution is all but inevitable, and they go through hell to get there. It's one of those realities about pop music that we pretend isn't going to happen _this_ time, until it does, and then all of a sudden we always noticed the cracks in the facade, the outages in the girl power. These days, the Flaming Lips are a band in some disarray, and it's nice to be reminded of a time what that wasn't the case. Anniversary reissues are good for that. When they released their 2006 album _At War With The Mystics_ , the Lips were already a psych-rock institution who'd become an unlikely touring sensation. Their previous album, 2002's _Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots_ , was the biggest thing they'd ever made, and it might still be their defining record. Naturally, they responded to that success by getting weirder. Right now, the roster at Sub Pop Records includes the Philadelphia noise-rock band Pissed Jeans _and_ the Vancouver noise-rock band PISS. That's synergy, baby! We need to get them together for a Monsters Of Piss tour. Despite their shared record label and their similar urine-based band names, nobody is going to confuse Pissed Jeans with PISS because they sound nothing like each other. In fact, the new song from PISS doesn't even sound anything like the _last_ song from PISS. The post PISS – “blocking a scene you can’t remember” appeared first on Stereogum.

Things are generally quite difficult for the Asiatic black bear, sometimes known as the moon bear. The moon bear's bile is used in some traditional Chinese medicines, and many of the animals are being held captive in Vietnam and China, keeping them in torturous conditions and extracting bile from their stomachs with needles. Fortunately, Vietnam recently banned the practice, and 150 rescued moon bears are being rehabilitated at a bear sanctuary enclosure in the country's Tam Dao national park. They also just got a private concert from Rick Wakeman. The post Rick Wakeman Performs For 150 Rescued Moon Bears In Vietnam appeared first on Stereogum.

Billy Joel was already on his way to stardom by the time he released _Turnstiles_ , his fourth album. _Turnstiles_ came out in May 1976 and included big songs like "New York State Of Mind" and "Say Goodbye To Hollywood." The record pushed him along the way to making his real commercial breakthrough with _The Stranger_ a year later. Now, there's a pretty successful Joel cover band called Turnstiles; who recently played some shows with Vampire Weekend. Did you ever watch the video of TV On The Radio playing "Wolf Like Me" on David Letterman's _Late Show_ in 2006? It's one of the all-time great TV performances. TVOTR were young and hungry, and they'd just made the single most anthemic song of a great career. They'd never been on TV before, and they attacked that stage with a fire-eyed intensity that somehow came through clearly on television. It's fucking awesome. Why am I even talking about this? If you've never seen it, you should watch it right now. If you _have_ seen it, you should watch it _again_ right now. Lime Garden, Brighton-based makers of charismatic danceable indie rock, released their sophomore album _Maybe Not Tonight_ in April. I don’t remember the first time I went to Saint Vitus Bar — the original Vitus, at 1120 Manhattan Ave. in Greenpoint. It can’t have been long after I moved to New York in the summer of 2013. The bar had just opened in 2011, and already, it was considered one of the best metal venues in the country. Word traveled, via photo slideshows on Brooklyn Vegan and dispatches from friends who were already in the city, and my jealousy swelled. Vitus wasn’t the only thing luring me to leave my Midwestern college town and my first post-grad job for the uncertainty of a studio apartment in deep Queens, but it was a major draw, and once I arrived in the city, I seamlessly integrated the club into my life. I think the reason I can’t remember the first time I went to Vitus is because it never felt like a landmark moment to me. It was more like one day I lived in Indiana, and the next, I was at Vitus all the time. The post Saint Vitus Bar Dances Again appeared first on Stereogum.

If you've never heard _Live The Storm_ , the 2008 album from the great Swedish crust punk band Disfear, I would advise you to change that immediately. _Live The Storm_ is an absolute beast of an album, and it remains one of my favorite heavy albums of this century. Like many aging rock bands, nu-metal veterans Slipknot have a Ship of Theseus quality to them. A decent chunk of the classic lineup has departed, most recently longtime DJ Sid Wilson, who was kicked out about a month ago for reportedly being a jerk. Before that, a decade after taking over the kit from founding drummer Joey Jordison, Jay Weinberg got the ax in 2023, which left him "heartbroken and blindsided." But Slipknot are more equipped for membership changes than some bands, owing to the grotesque masks each member wears. The quasi-anonymity also affords them a Daft Punk-like ability to not look old onstage, which surely amplifies their already considerable appeal to younger audiences. When you add all those teenagers rocking Slipknot tees to the pool of longtime fans, you apparently have enough people to fill up a bunch of stadiums. Much like his old Saddle Creek labelmate Conor Oberst, longtime Cursive frontman Tim Kasher is a director now. A couple of years ago, Kasher made his directorial debut with an independent found-footage horror feature called _Who's Watching_. I haven't seen it yet, but you can imagine that a film about a creepy, obsessive stalker might have certain resonance with some of Kasher's lyrics. Synthpop wizard Vince Clarke was responsible for some of the most indelible jams of the early '80s, but he took a while to find a stable artistic partnership. Clarke wrote most of the song's on Depeche Mode's classic 1981 debut _Speak & Spell_, then left the group. He formed Yazoo with Alison Moyet, but they only released two (excellent) LPs before breaking up. Finally, Clarke looked for collaborators by placing an ad in _NME_ , and that's how he found the singer Andy Bell. They became the duo Erasure, and they've been working together ever since. Right now, I'm about halfway through a great three-hour interview with Have Heart/Fiddlehead frontman Pat Flynn on Mutually Assured Destruction/Eliminators frontman Ace Stallings' hardcore podcast _Forum Of Passion_. It's a great listen. Flynn really knows how to talk about his own life and hardcore music at the same time, eloquently talking about how it feels to be a middle-aged professional — he's a high-school history teacher in his everyday life — who's still knee-deep in this stuff. Flynn has chronicled his own growth in his music, and it's all over Fiddlehead's great recent record _Baby I'll Change_ , one of the year's best EPs. Back in April, the influential Swedish singer/rapper hybrid Yung Lean and the French producer GENER8ION went viral with their "Storm" video. For as long as it’s existed, prestige rap has been the most deceptive trapdoor in hip-hop. Rappers old enough to remember “Slow Jamz” and “Jesus Walks” decide they need a party anthem _and_ a conscious rap song. People who thought _good kid, m.A.A.d city_ was the best album of the 2010s suddenly realize that they can’t have a classic album without voicemail recordings from their aunty or a song where they’re “more vulnerable than ever.” If the church choir on his new album-opening song “Mercy” weren’t enough of an indication, a recent interview with Billboard makes it more than a little clear that AZ Chike was trying to make one of _those_ albums.
