Happy gotcha day, Lilly! Will you give Lilly a belly rub for her gotcha day? After I adopted her from the rescue, it quickly became clear that she makes space for herself because she came from an unsafe situation, but all she wants is to put more love into the world. Love my chaos gremlin girl 🐾

I'm working on a reimagining of my first crochet dragon, a rainbow dragon named Pryde. I tried a few gradient rainbow yarns but decided to color change by hand. Straight lines felt too unnatural, so I added some staggered stitches. Honoring the original heart panel wings, I'm emphasizing the heart.

With Episode 36 of Paxwood up, that means three more episodes and the epilogue remain in Book 1. Are you curious about Book 2 yet? Any guesses whose story Kerry will tell next?

Okay. Honorable mention favorite character for Jylisa and her amazing hacker fAIry Eitwon. I mean, all she wants is to propose to the love of her life, daughter of the ship's engineer, pilot of the Light Echo, a vicious pirate vessel. She's got no heritage, no wealth to her name.

Okay, but, really, Jax. Jax is my absolute favorite character in all of A Ring of Secrets. Jax knows what he wants, and he goes for it. When he recognized the love of his life in a thief that was sneaking into the research facility where he was an intern? He went for it.

Songbird doesn't get a lot of screen time in A Ring of Secrets, but she's still my favorites. Along with Kip, she was one of the first two characters in the story to actually exist, helping me understand the whole universe that these characters are operating in.

100

Steph 🧶📚 @stephweavestales.com · 21/04/2025

Kip is completely my favorite character in A Ring of Secrets. He was actually the first character to exist in my mind for this corner of the universe. I started a short story about how he and Songbird met, and it sort of spiraled outward from there. First, the crew of the Rhemora. Then the rest.

Shen's easily my favorite character in A Ring of Secrets. She comes into the novel with one desperate attempt to hold on to something precious to her by passing it off to a stranger. The chances that this would even work are so, so slim. But she's a very "Never tell me the odds" sort of a person.

100

Steph 🧶📚 @stephweavestales.com · 18/04/2025

Oh, but, of course Lira is my favorite character in A Ring of Secrets. She's the writer, the dreamer, the creative spirit. Her friends think of her as being vector-straight, or in other words, a person whose moral convictions are clear and guide her in a forthright direction.

Quzen, Quzen, Quzen. Okay, Quzen is definitely my favorite character in A Ring of Sectets because what you see is what you get. He's not a natural academic, but he understands grit. It might take him twice as long to study for that test. It might take him a minute to find the strategy that clicks.

Let me tell you why Nix is absolutely my favorite character in A Ring of Secrets. I love that Nix is a maker and a doer, although it can be one of her more troublesome characteristics in the wrong situations. She doesn't like sitting still. If there's a problem, she wants to solve it.

Text on a Sci-Fi background reads: “That’s one thing I don’t get about the Academy system, if I’m being honest. All the Cooperative industries need Blank Slates to keep menial labor affordable. You set them with specific parameters and they take care of the rest. They buy them under the table from pirates just as freely as they pick up debtors and criminals through the court system and Academy wash-outs. So, why waste all the money and resources on orphans no one wants? Send them out to nowhere planets. Pay the salaries of all these teachers. Facilities costs. Room and board. It’s not exactly cheap. You’d think the corporations would skip the middle step and just Blank Slate every unwanted kid in the galaxy.”

All Academy students had their memories wiped as part of the Entry Exams—standard procedure for any Academy for the Welfare of Disadvantaged Youth, a Cooperative-wide system that took in orphans and poor children from the overpopulated Central Planets and carried them out to the colonies on stasis ships. The journey at standard speeds could take upwards of forty years.

During the early years of the program, the adjustment to waking up after all that lost time had proven so mentally jarring for the children that very few adapted to colony life. So, the Academy went all-in when Sonnett Corp came out with technology that would allow for a partial memory wipe to provide these orphans with a fresh start and an opportunity to fully leave their pasts behind and focus on their futures instead.
