Answers: (1) They are all hot topics in contemporary sociology. (2) They are about the only topics where research money is available. (3) They are intractable, massive, convoluted social problems where it is extremely unlikely that any progress can be made through policies and programs. What do preferences for various candy bars,15 short-range demographic predictions, development of attitude scales, and election polling, have in common?
