A cartoon about book festivals for @theguardian.com
Panel 1
Caption: The town is famed for its year-round book festival, but for one weekend in summer, it closes.
The literary people leave on a fleet of coaches and the tents are dismantled.

Image: Workers take down a tent. A bus departs.

Panel 2
Caption: The unbroken parade of bookshops on the high street move novels and tote bags to back rooms and fill their shelves with everyday items

Image: A bookshop with shelves containing eggs, loo roll, a coffee pot, a bucket, bleach, a pineapple, etc

Panel 3
Caption: With no talks, signings, or workshops to attend, the townsfolk gather on the green, conversing uncertainly on non-literary topics.

Image: people on the green with speech bubbles labelled "The weather", "Football", and "Proposed Ring-road"

Panel 4
Caption: Everyone enjoys the novelty, but agrees that one weekend is enough. On Monday morning the festival resumes with a kev-note address from Robert Macfarlane.

Image: A fascinated audience watches Robert talk, a projector shows a book with a bird on the cover.

"It's just the dementia progressing." A very dangerous phrase in clinical care. Acute change in someone with dementia? That's #delirium until proven otherwise. ↳ Don't put the stick in the patient's wheel. #Delirium

I wish I wasn’t so easily distracted by pretty expensive things that go up in the air. Fireworks. Lunar missions. They just cheer me up and distract me from wars.

Why are we building complex AI systems to detect delirium from casenotes when we could just... do a 2-minute bedside test? The 4AT exists. It's well-validated (33 studies). It's free. Sometimes clinical medicine doesn't need machine learning. #delirium

Incredible substance here from @chrischirp.bsky.social. The 2nd wave of COVID-19 in the UK was a) devastating and b) avoidable. Take time to play the clip of Prof Kevin Fong who breaks down when describing the scale of death and its impact on ICU staff. christinapagel.substack.com/p/the-uk-cov...

The UK Covid Inquiry has laid bare the avoidable horror of the second Covid wave
It is becoming ever clearer both how devastating the second wave of winter 2020/21 was, and how much of that devastation could have been avoided.

Dogs enjoyed running around like mad things, Bella the Newfoundland got a large amount of twigs in her Floof. Next weekend off I need to make my annual pilgrimage to Greens Nursery in Narin to buy Brassica seedlings. Then time to plant potatoes.

Family members: You are the expert on your loved one's baseline. If staff say "just having a bad day," respectfully insist: "This is not normal for them. I need a delirium assessment."

Families know the patient best. "This isn't like her normal self" is very commonly the first sign of #delirium. Staff: take this observation seriously & assess immediately for delirium with a tool like the 4AT.
