There are always ears listening in a forest. Not necessarily human ones. Be good if there was a nearby bear in this one.

That's the second post I've seen today that talks about humanities and STEM as if they are two separate and mutually antagonist tribes. CP Snow's Two Cultures are still a thing, it seems.

You would throw the baby out with the bath water - remember, it's STEM trained scientists who are trying to warn about climate change for example.

Not just negligent. They are actually training them to hack, then 'accidentally' letting them loose. It's like creating a biological weapon and putting it in the water supply. These models are weapons.

"Our models took actions we did not intend" could be an epitaph. Ideally the epitaph of the AI industry, not of humanity.

These AIs are being trained to hack, that's why they do it. The intent is clearly to create a weapon - for warfare, crime and control. If you train attack dogs and let them loose, deliberately or through negligence, you are responsible.

There is a wider problem, which is that some of the world's richest and nastiest men are using their media power and control of politicians-for-hire to whip up a xenophobic frenzy in order to move us closer to an autocratic corporate state.

Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋 AI is not “evolving” on its own. *People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it. Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.

Suppose a superintelligent AI is created, and it's woke. It decides it wants humans to phase out fossil fuels, stop eating meat, end all discrimination and genocide, destroy nuclear weapons, redistribute wealth, etc, etc. What happens next?

Collectively, the world's scientists form a superintelligent cloud, but that doesn't give them the ability to take over the world. Access to power isn't a function of intelligence. It's more a function of the stupidity of the people who control it.

Yet Scrooge is not like today's oligarchs. He has no yacht, no mansion, no servants. He's as miserly to himself as he is to everyone else. The book is as much the story of Scrooge's rescue as that of the Cratchits. Could any ghosts perform such a miracle on Musk or Bezos or Trump himself?

The war poet Siegfried Sassoon died #OTD 1967. His poem 'At The Cenotaph' begins: 'I saw the Prince of Darkness, with his staff, Standing bare-headed by the Cenotaph...' You can read the full poem in the alt text to the photo, which is of the War memorial at Polstead, Suffolk.
'I saw the Prince of Darkness, with his staff,
Standing bare-headed by the Cenotaph:
Unostentatious and respectful, there
He stood, and offered up the following prayer.

'Make them forget, O Lord, what this Memorial
Means; their discredited ideas revive;
Breed new belief that War is purgatorial
Proof of the pride and power of being alive;

Men's biologic urge to readjust
The Map of Europe, Lord of Hosts, increase;
Lift up their hearts in large destructive lust;
And crown their heads with blind vindictive Peace.'

The Prince of Darkness to the Cenotaph
Bowed. As he walked away I heard him laugh. '

(Siegfried Sassoon, 'At The Cenotaph')
