NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV's Al encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah's team then privately lobbied the pope's advisers "to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously." Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing.

There's a story being spread by Christian new sites which is misrepresenting the situation at Edinburgh. Here's an appeal from Rachel Myers. Please trust someone internal to the department over sensationalism.

This is getting a bit overblown in the Christian media. The church of Scotland is focusing its training in Glasgow, and so Edinburgh seems to be making programme changes as a logical response to this move. The department itself doesn't seem to be at risk.

Penitent sinner or fiery saint? Mary Magdalene is one of the Bible's most divisive figures. These paintings show why
Known as the "apostle to the apostles”, the controversial and multifaceted saint Mary Magdalene is shrouded in mythology and mystery. What do these artworks reveal about her?

Ooh it's actually a joint statement. "The churches are particularly concerned about the coexistence and cooperation of the people in Saxony-Anhalt, and especially about respecting the God-given human dignity that belongs unconditionally to everyone."

Not that UK postliberalism is without its problems, but these kinds of critiques tend to assume a North American context. There's something that feels like the genealogical fallacy happening when we appeal to origins instead of looking at the developments of this "school" across the world.

This is why readers typically throw away books immediately after reading them, smash CDs immediately upon hearing them, shun acquaintances immediately upon learning a few facts about them.

David Fergusson closed the Scottish Dogmatics Conference last week with a call for a refined version of modalism to be permissible alongside Nicene trinitarianism. I suspect there'll be a cottage industry of responses to this when it comes out in print.

As MPs launch an inquiry into student loans in England, it’s clear that the debate around how undergraduate degrees are funded shows no sign of slowing down.
