There is a church on 204 E Del Ray that has interesting panels on it doors. (You may need to enlarge to see the detail). There’s also lots of interesting Art Deco buildings around Del Ray. Not sure about their doors though.
A white door with raised carved red panels of a brick church. The number 204 is displayed on a panel on top of the door & above that is an arched decorative window.

Book 2 of The Arc of a Scythe. Ends with a huge cliff hanger. Interesting world that has transcended death thanks to a sentient all-knowing AI. Scythes are needed to randomly (& humanely) cull people. But what happens if Scythes start enjoying what they do? Curious where this series is going next.

Obligatory Art on the Avenue haul photo. Apparently birds & flowers were the theme for me this year. Not bad for a condensed trip (only made it from ~ Randolph to Oxford but yay to my back for holding out!) And dinner is taken care of (thanks Spice Kraft!). Especially loved bumping into folks!
- Framed blue bird made out of vintage stamps

- Pottery bowl (my weakness!) with a greenish-yellow band at the bottom & painted line flowers

- Pen & ink print - close up of 1/2 a sunflower head

- a metal bird sculpture made up of up cycled silverware (to keep the one I hit last year company in the garden).

Interesting how much the Victorian house really looms over the bungalow that’s being replaced by a duplex. I’m sure it’s been blocking sun & affecting that owners privacy for a while now. 🤷‍♀️

Was neat to learn more about the history…the Victorian mansions focused on form > function. Very asymmetrical, turrets etc. After Chicago “White City” World fair, shifted to more symmetrical functional houses. The Georgian house we visited (1st pic) originally was a Victorian house (2nd pic).
Tour groups stands on front steps of a beautiful blue-gray Georgian-style Gilded Age mansion. It is very stately & very symmetrical. It looks nothing like the original house. Incredibly informed & entertaining tour guide (and owner of the mansion, now a B&B!) stands in front of a large portrait of the original mansion in an ornate gold frame. The original house is a very Victorian-style house made of red sandstone. It is delightfully asymmetrical with turrets & multiple roof lines & very busy. It looks nothing like it does today.

This was…ok? Think I just wasn’t in the right mood for a cozy fantasy. A Jenny Greenteeth saves a witch from drowning & they embark on a quest (along w/a warlock &a fae dog) to save the local village from an evil entity. Ended up skimming a fair bit of the quest. Ending got a bit more interesting.

Decided to continue w/the P&P inspired books. A murder is committed in the woods of Pemberley on the eve of a ball. Wickham is implicated (of course!) but did he do it? Enjoyed this but am curious. Is it typical for this genre to spend the last 3rd of the book telling (not showing) what happened?

Working my way through my extensive back catalog of unlistened to audiobooks. Narrated by the always delightful Stephen Briggs. Mix of fictional (Dodger) and non-fictional (Charles Dickens, Henry Mayhew) characters set in Victorian England. Even throws in Sweeney Todd for good measure.

So my youngest (a wildlife biologist w/ Clemson) gets to do the neatest things. Spent 2 days in North Dakota getting certified to fire a ducknet. Apparently they seed an area w/ corn for a week to trick the ducks into thinking they are safe before they fire it. No ducks were caught in this video.🦆

That said, beachy decorating can be fun. I had lots of it at my (non-rental) beach house (in my defense most of it was from local craft fairs & only a couple of things were from BB&B).

- a block with Beach Waves Sea Shore Water Tides Ocean Surf Sand
- a candle holder with a crab
- a Fischers Popcorn metal bucket

I only mention stairs bec the adorable stairs in my wonderful little house already feel more precarious than normal stairs. They are steeper/narrower than usual & don’t have full bannisters. Ripped out the carpet on them because I tripped & barely caught myself. They are tricky for my 80yo parents.

‹ [AVA] Gas powered leaf blow...

you all do realize the hypocrisy on so many levels right? The city of Alexandria has exempt themselves from this new regulation!

we are all giving our local government more and more power instead of asking each other to cooperate and perhaps have those blowers use limited to specific hours of the day...

what's next? Yes, mowers, trimmers, generators.. etc etc

What about fireplaces, burning wood? They too should be banned! While some of you enjoy the odor of burning fireplaces they output incomplete combustion horrible for all! Should they all be banned?

What about gas appliances? Should they all be banned?

Back to giving government more power, when we ask for restrictions against others parking on our blocks we are asking our city to charge all of us to park in front of our own homes!

We have allowed residents to restrict vehicles by asking for speed bumps, bike lanes etc yet we continue to drive a car with just one passenger wasting fuel polluting our environment! Vehicles that as as many claim a great danger to[AVA] Gas powered leaf blow...

We have allowed residents to restrict vehicles by asking for speed bumps, bike lanes etc yet we continue to drive a car with just one passenger wasting fuel polluting our environment! Vehicles that as as many claim a great danger to pedestrians. Why aren't we banning cars off our streets? Maybe we are little bit at the time by squeezing our streets out.. streets are so narrow now that one has to pull over for oncoming cars... or, when someone wants to turn no one can go around the turning car thanks to bump outs to protect pedestrians who have so far to safely walk... many in Alexandria without a driveway can't park in front of their homes and have to choose to stop driving or park blocks away...

About mulch...

Mulch is bad on several levels.
first, it promotes an environment for termites, as the wood decays it is a perfect moist bed for termites which when mulch is against your house or other structures has negative consequences. i refuse to use mulch.
second, how is mulch made? It’s made by large very loud diesel burning grinders that pollute our neighborhoods with both noise and diesel fumes!

Again, I refuse to use mulch!

Anne Helen Peterson had a take a while ago about “men who like women”. Haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Ryan Gosling definitely is a man who likes women. He’s also just *really* comfortable with himself so he’s fine being a goof & poking fun at himself. That explains a lot of his appeal.

Glen Powell likes women.
#substack

Star image is always an amalgamation of roles and "real life" public performance, so some of this overarching feeling stems from the way he looks at Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You, but also the way his character flirts in Everybody Wants Some and how he relates and defers to Daisy Edgar-Jones' character in Twisters and in Hit Man. It's different than knowing you can get women, or wanting to control women, or even loving women. He likes them. He appreciates them. He enjoys their company.

Tom Cruise doesn't like women. Neither does Miles Teller. Channing Tatum likes women. So does Ryan Gosling. Brad Pitt used to like women but doesn't anymore. Leonardo Di Caprio only likes them occasionally. Bradley Cooper doesn't, George Clooney does. Matt Damon doesn't, Ben Affleck only does in that one scene in the J.Lo documentary.
Marlon Brando didn't, Montgomery Clift did. Paul Newman didn't onscreen but did IRL. Cary Grant did, John Wayne definitely, definitely didn't. Will Smith pretends like he doesn't but I'm not convinced. Mark Wahlberg absolutely does not, but Daniel Day-Lewis does. So does Paul Mescal.

Found this July 4th message from Coalition for a Livable Alexandria fascinating. It’s framed as just wanting to be a part of the conversation & to be heard (which I get!) but leaves out the part where they oppose everything & it doesn’t acknowledge when the city makes concessions based on feedback.
