Expansion of aerobic methanotrophy to the phylum of Actinomycetota and its environmental implications | Applied and Environmental Microbiology
The climate crisis is one of the most imminent threats to humanity and all life on our planet. Methane is not only the second most potent greenhouse gas (GHG) and is responsible for approximately 31% of GHG-induced global warming since the start of the industrial revolution (1) but is also the most rapid increasing GHG in the atmosphere (2). The latter is likely caused by increased microbiological production of methane from, e.g., wetlands (2). This fact stresses the importance of methanotrophic microbes that can degrade methane with and without oxygen (3, 4) and thereby fulfill a crucial role in our global climate.

By comparing bronchial and nasal mucus, researchers find that mucus' ability to neutralize influenza A virus varies with the anatomical origin and correlates with the abundance of triglycerides & specific sialylated glycoproteins and glycolipids. #mSphere: journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...
Differentiation of bronchial (BEpC) and nasal (NEpC) primary epithelial cells and mucus harvesting. (A) schematic overview of primary cell differentiation and mucus harvesting. Following a 4-week differentiation period at air-liquid interface (ALI), mucus was harvested in ultrapure H2O at 4, 6, and 8 weeks of ALI culture. The illustration was created at Biorender.com. B-C BEpC (B) and NEpC (C) from three different donors were differentiated and grown at air-liquid interface (ALI) for 28 days. Transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) was monitored at the time points indicated. Shown are means ± standard deviations from two independent wells.

Image duplication erodes trust in the peer review process. This #mBio article shares results from ASM Journals’ 2023 pilot program using Imagetwin, an image duplication screening tool, which is now a part of routine ethics checks performed by #ASMJournals: asm.social/2yQ
ASM figure pre-screening workflow can identify image duplication concerns using Imagetwin and address them before publication. (A) Image duplication represents two-thirds of figure-related concerns in post-acceptance manuscripts. (B) All image duplication concerns were resolved following our policies and procedures in accordance with ethical guidelines by modifying the figures and/or text. (C) Complex image duplication concerns were resolved through editorial consultations, which sometimes led to revoking acceptance decision for the manuscript.
