I know about this because I'm the children's book purchaser for a library and I saw an upcoming early reader based on it.

I never notice the music in stores unless it's something I specifically already know that catches my ear. It's not that loud, the acoustics are bad, and I'm doing something else, I don't think that counts as "hearing" it.

I pitched "octopus" and you pooh-poohed it ON YOUR PODCAST!

I'm hearing of it and "Langley" for the first time now. That doesn't make me special or something - I literally did nothing to "achieve" my ignorance - just, anyone assuming it was impossible to miss, you are wrong.

at least it's nice when they let you choose between "Yes" and "Not right now, but please keep bugging me about this every time."

I see it on a lot of menus and I really hope the novelty of "photorealistic digusting-looking food from the Uncanny Valley" wears off sooner rather than later.

I have never heard of this before! I checked my old clothes pile and both pairs of jeans in there have them facing right, but I couldn't say if I always do it that way and I'll never be able to do a pristine trial again, so... I am right-handed, so maybe it's just that?

I got the first two and had them sitting around as tsundoku forever and I finally got to them and they're great! I recommend this series!

If I'm figuring right, The Secret of Shadow Ranch (Nancy Drew #5) becomes public domain next year. This is important because it's the first one with Bess and George in it, so you can finally do PROPER Nancy Drew.

My guess is a combination of 1) with the advent of medicine by mail people have more and easier access than ever and 2) the demographic affected most, young women, is already liberal by like 30 points so there's just not that much room for a shift there.

oh my god, everything about this sounds amazing. The Magician's Nephew is one of the best Narnia books (just don't read it first, the modern numbering is wrong) and Jadis is the best.

I've never heard of any book club asking the author's permission. It's a published book, anyone can read it!

The funny thing is it was a pretty good fanfic! It's been ruined from multiple directions now but at the time it was pretty clever and fun and had a lot of neat ideas.

Now I'm morbidly curious, because what on Earth would they even be about? Active sexism and/or racism is kind of hard without being able to depict the targets, so is it just a bunch of white guys talking about how bad taxes are or something?

I hadn't thought of it like this, but considering everything we learn about the big-picture galaxy in Dungeon Crawler Carl it's exactly right. It's like Hitchhiker's if the POV never left the set of a Vogon game show.

I'm seeing a bunch of voting fights, my take is: - ALWAYS vote - if the only options are "bad" and "worse," not voting for "bad" is a vote for "worse." - in practice, in the US this means always voting Democratic. - not voting doesn't say "listen to me," it says "I don't show up, so don't bother."

I always forget to do this, but if you're following me and don't know, I have a couple books out for middle grade readers, Unboxing Libby and The Ink Witch (I think they're fun for adults, too, though.) I'm really proud of both of them, and The Ink Witch got a Stonewall Honor award!

You can make anyone look bad "on a timeline." My niece is five, and has killed zero people. When Ted Bundy was five, he'd killed zero people. Oh my god, the trajectories are IDENTICAL!

Until the internet I never knew that there were people who took this to just mean Ralph literally dreams about being a Viking. I get what they mean and that it's "simpler," but the fact that the other interpretation intuitively unfolds a whole backstory is what makes it funny!

I had to look up what this is and... it's a flip phone, but side-to-side instead of up and down? Which is...desirable, I guess? It doesn't make the world actively worse, so I guess I gotta count that as a tech win by today's standards!

You can go back to a lot of SNES games and they're still beautiful and playable by today's standards. N64...mostly not so much. The appeal was HEAVILY based on 3D, any 3D, being novel and cool.

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.

If I had to guess, probably it's using it to generate the paragraph based on randomly picked data points? That kind of highly constrained use is one I don't actually mind, personally - like a fancy name generator. It DOES offer AI images, which is blecch but totally optional.

As much as I enjoyed the books at the time, I never understood the whole "I wish I could get a Hogwarts letter!" thing, because the books really hammer you with how awful the school is. I don't even think that's a failing of the writing, it seems very intentional.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't his first movie, but my only hope here to go for the longshot and hope that Michael Ende secretly based The Neverending Story on an SNL bit.

Awesome! I just got this yesterday and it's the one I'll be using from now on. I've been surprised how often there's a perfectly good alternative to these seeming monopolies (and usually better, because they can't coast on being the default.) I went Linux too and it's SO MUCH BETTER.

High school is TERRIBLE (second only to middle school, the worst life period of all unless you're very unlucky.) You're not good yet at anything you care about, have responsibility without freedom, usually haven't found your people yet, everyone else is miserable too and taking it out on each other.

I think of myself as both, and it's always confusing to me when those groups don't like each other. We mostly have the same values and the arguments are just about the execution, while our opponents are actual monsters who want bad things for everyone, so shouldn't we prioritize beating them first?

This might be an autistic thing but I have never understood what shaking hands is supposed to be. Can't I just talk to you about stuff? Why do you want to touch my hand? Human connection happens through ideas, not doing weird little rituals with your meat waldos.

I've heard one of the most reliable ways to keep people informed of upcoming projects, etc, in these days of the busted internet is just to have an email list for sending out announcements. Let me know if that's something you'd find useful!

You can't say what he actually thought without turning people off, so they had to fall back on "he supported free speech even if it was offensive," which, uh, rang just a mite hollow when they were, at the same time, getting people fired for offending then.

So I don't know anything about this except that despite looking like SheZow!, being Australian like SheZow!, and apparently having exactly the same "very hard to parse what this is saying, in a way that pleases nobody" quality as SheZow!, it is not made by the creator of SheZow!
