The job of the design lead: make the work of the UX team legible to the corporate people, while making the corporate context understandable to the design team. Yup, helping the business understand the value of open-ended, exploratory work is not an easy task!

Design’s Legibility Gap
Strap in. This one gets wonky. For some personal work, I'm unpacking the question, "What are the conditions that enable a humane organization?" Emerging from that effort is the concept of 'legibility,' and I believe it to be crucial to understanding why UX/Design struggles within so many organizations.

Design’s Legibility Gap. Legibility is the reason why UX struggles in a lot of companies (according to Peter Merholz). Business people value predictable, measurable and only see the “pixels in the screens”. Meanwhile research and exploration often stay invisible.

Do you need some beautiful, color combination inspiration that have enough AA contrast? Check out this nice little project: labs.shiftnudge.com/color-shift?...
Screenshot of a color contrast tool showing the letters Aa in peach on a dark purple panel beside a starry night sky photograph with mountain silhouettes. Bottom bar shows that the contrast ratio is 4.48 to 1, and WCAG AA status.

Also, October is breast cancer awareness month, while I do not have content on this topic on my blog, this is also a reminder that it's important to get regularly. Take care!

Also the first version of this post said "living" instead of "leaving". At this point I don't know if my brain is on Halloween mode or if I might need to get my brain checked out 😅

When you are tired and put "Dead colleagues" instead of "dear colleagues" and contemplate leaving the typo for a second, for the plot, but also because none reads emails anyway 😬

"64% of product pages tested had at least one critical accessibility issue" This comes from an analysis of 59,400 product pages across many different websites. Chat makes me sad: the top 10 is again, easy fixes: contrasts, link names, heading, small targets. Folks, we can do better!

”Many independent educators who used to earn a living from web development training and developer relations have reported that GenAI has ruined their business.“ molily.de/web-dev-e… While we don’t directly sell web development training, we have definitely felt the impact of this.

The fix isn't learning to code, it's technical literacy: understanding APIs, data models, performance and accessibility, and evaluating AI output. That's how designers keep strategic influence.

Stef Walter @stephaniewalter.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Yup yup yup. Since the 2010s, the industry has told designers they don't need technical skills. As a result: designers can’t join technical conversations and lose agency.

Instead, it raised the floor. If you can’t tell the difference between functional code and broken code, between accessible design and inaccessible design, between scalable architecture and technical debt, these tools just let you fail faster.”

AI didn’t create the craft crisis in design — it exposed the technical literacy gap that’s been eroding strategic influence for over a decade.

Why AI is exposing design’s craft crisis. Sometimes you read something that feels like a punch in the guts, yet, you keep nodding. Here we are. This: “We told ourselves AI would level the playing field.

Buongiorno! I've decided to go to Milan and maybe Venice and Florence. I know nothing about those cities. Are there any local folks in my followers who have great tips for me? I need to check where to book some hotels, but also, what to visit. And of course: where should I eat. Hehehe.

Monthly reminder that you can stare into the abyss, scream into the void, but please avoid pssst pssting into any of those, as they might psst psst back, and I don't think the current state of the world is ready for that.

Yes I was surprised too. The echolalia is usually repeating directly works or sentences, either verbally or in your head. I mask so it's in my head. The song thing (also sometimes movie quotes) is apparently a flavor of this where the repetition is delayed. The human brain is fascinating ❤️

Stef Walter @stephaniewalter.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Haha same. I had a remix of APT ft the The Ting Tings because it's the same BPM. I eventually checked online and was happy to out that someone made the remix it worked!! I don't know how to explain but the videos where they put small parts of songs together: my brain.

Haha, brain decided today is a delayed echololia kind of day, so here we are. A colleague said "yesterday" and my brain went straight to "all my troubles seemed so far awaaaaay". At least, my brain has good tastes hehe.

Also if you DMed me or sent me an email I haven't answered yet, same, I am way behind and am scared to even open the mailbox right now.

Turns out sometimes all you need to make the day better is a giant pickled yellow radish. No I won't elaborate further.

So... Does the R queue work? Did I miss my call? How am I supposed to know how long this will take if you don't at least show the last number called for each queue?

Stef Walter @stephaniewalter.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
This post is sponsored by the "waiting 20min to get the damn parcel and might just give up" mood. Also don't get me started on how having different numbers for different queues and displaying only 4 makes no sense. I am R 286. Currently displaying C528, C527, T108, C526.

Honey, how often do you read a friend's message, put it as "unread" so that you remember to answer, forgot, now 2 weeks passed, the little unread bubble is haunting you but also you are too scared to open it because now they might actually be mad at you, so let's leave if for another week? (RSD)

Darling, how much money did you waste because every month when the bill to the subscription comes you remember you must cancel and then, oooh a butterfly. You eventually put a reminder that you ignored and it took another 4 months to cancel?!
