Stephane Bura @stephanebura.com · 25/08/2026The joseki part is fascinating and thought-provoking. I wonder if the shared knowledge of meta-abstractions is the path to truly cooperative AIs - AI relying on a human to know what to do when a given pattern is identified and a human communicating with an AI by invoking a known pattern. 110

Stephane Bura @stephanebura.com · 30/03/2026Data levels of abstraction 1: Good. Creates categories that can add depth to gameplay (e.g. alert behaviors, water-based enemies) 2: Rare. For innovative or very complex systems (e.g. transient or entity-altering categories). 3: Over-engineered unless game exposes level 2 to the player. 010
Stephane Bura @stephanebura.com · 03/03/2026My instinct is to adopt the opposite strategy: build a LLM on a game's world model. The challenge being decribing a world in operative terms that both make sense for a LLM and can be interacted with using such an interface. The way LLMs are built right now makes interating toward this a nightmare. 111
Stephane Bura @stephanebura.com · 02/03/2026You learn the limits of the model of a game through the failure of your epistemic actions. Interactions with LLMs never clearly fail. Ergo, you can never master such a game to the point that you have a genuine feeling of agency. Good for psychedelic/poetic rides, bad for games. 030

Stephane Bura @stephanebura.com · 16/02/2026Some games are about obfuscation of the underlying model so that enchanting discoveries can be made. Most of the time, though, you want to empower your players by letting them deeply interact with the game's model without needing a layer of interpretation where mistakes can happen. 100
Stephane Bura @stephanebura.com · 02/02/2026Absolutely. Question everything that is not at the root of the medium. Action verbs, immersion, difficulty, etc. Patterns are to be found at every rung of the ladder of abstraction. 010
Stephane Bura @stephanebura.com · 27/01/2026One trick is to have the reader/player agree with the lie about the world the protagonist believes in the beginning as a matter of self-preservation (for both). As in Children of Men. 032
