Year 12 researchers are currently working on genome sequencing Narcissis & Dutch Master daffodil varieties & had a full day of DNA extraction & gel electrophoresis. A lot of failed attempts before success. The round of applause on gel 12 was amazing! MinIon sequencing next. @cheamhigh.bsky.social

Absolutely delighted by this impartial review of my book published in the journal, School Science Review (open access): www.ase.org.uk/system/files... #EduSky #UKEd #SciTeachUK #iTeachBio
In the 20+ years that I have been teaching biology I have come across many texts that purport to transform classroom practice and improve student outcomes. However, rarely have I been so convinced by the power of a new theoretical underpinning for a pedagogical technique such as the one presented here. Moore-Anderson provides detailed discussions of systems theory, cybernetics and variation theory and their relevance to the biology classroom. Alongside the explanations, he provides concrete examples grounded in the classroom and over 40
diagrams that can be used to teach key topics.

The book starts with explanations of the underpinning theories he has applied to his teaching. This can, at times, be heavy going, and although the ‘key ideas’ are highlighted it can feel like there is a lot of information to absorb. However, as the book continues the scaffolding becomes clear and the reader can see how these ideas build towards coherent classroom strategies. It may be tempting to skip the theory at the beginning of the book and jump to using the diagrams in lessons; however, to be most effective it is important to understand the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ behind these.

Although this book is specifically about teaching biology, there are ideas that are relevant to teaching all science disciplines and it may have benefited from a collation of the ‘key ideas’ and ‘assumptions’ presented as they apply to teaching and learning of all sciences or all classroom settings.

Overall, Moore-Anderson presents a well-reasoned and compelling argument for the application of cybernetics and variation theory to the classroom. This is not an easy read, but, in my opinion, it is a thought-provoking read and a book that biology teachers should invest time in, to consider the theories, key ideas and diagrams, and how they could apply these in their own classroom.

For Maths fans, 2025 is a square. 45² = 45 x 45 = 2025 Also, 9² x 5² = 2025 40² + 20² + 5² = 2025 My favourite? 1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³ = 2025 #Mathematics #teaching #education

STEMyBanda @stemybanda.bsky.social · 06/12/2024
True but my point is the variations should not exist. At the end of the day it’s young people affected by these variations. Schools are fab at comparing big stuff but on the other end is a child whose outcomes are affected and that is not ok

STEMyBanda @stemybanda.bsky.social · 06/12/2024
Sad really really that YP outcomes are like this. Although I do wonder if all sch got +P8 would the measure change? Personally I don’t like the use of it as for some schs there seems to be very little that can be done. Otherwise why has it not been done from a govt perspective?

What are the chemical triggers for menstruation? And what causes period cramps? This graphic, a collaboration with @periodically.bsky.social, looks at the chemistry behind the menstrual cycle: bit.ly/3ZkpqMz #ChemSky 🧪
Infographic on the chemistry of the menstrual cycle. The graphic highlights the two sub-cycles, the ovarian cycle and the uterian cycle, and the varying hormone levels during them.

Follicle stimulating hormone stimulates the growth of a follicle in the ovaries. After ovulation, levels drp to prevent development of multiple follicles.

Luteinising hormone triggers the release of an egg from the ovaries and starts the conversion of the follicle to a corpus luteum which is essential for establishing and maintaining pregnancy.

Estrogen, produced by the ovaries, causes the uterine lining to grow and triggers the production of luteinising hormone. Low levels of estrogen and progesterone cause the top layers of the uterine lining to break down - this is menstruation.

The corpus luteum releases progesterone which stimulates thickening of the uterine lining and the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins cause contractions which shed the uterine lining and cause cramps.

I think one area that gets overlooked in CPD is what to do with teachers that have got to the stage they have built routines, are reflective about practice…Is a CPD session on building routines or questioning etc that just touches the surface enough? We need more CPD that challenges these teachers.
