She's better at saying "I love you" through actions instead of words. Her friends and family definitely know they are loved. Romantically, though, she is bad at figuring out her feelings and it takes time, a significant event or receiving a confession herself (or all three) for her to say the words.

Summary:

Stella Altair of the Kha, the Scions of the Seventh Dawn's newest addition and last hope, finds herself mired in grief and struggling without allies in a frozen, unfriendly land. That is, until she is introduced to the surprisingly warm and welcoming commander of Camp Dragonhead.

Haurchefant Greystone has his hands full with helping ward his people from both internal and external attacks, when a mysterious adventurer and her two companions arrive on his doorstep, requesting his help with a dangerous and improbable mission. Who is Stella Altair, and can she really do all that she claims? Why does his heart compel him to believe?

Slow burn, strangers to friends to... totally just really good friends, right? Mostly canon-compliant, following ARR and Heavensward, but Haurchefant lives. Very slow burn, marked explicit for future chapters.

Chapter 1: A Warm Welcome
Chapter Text

Stella Altair of the Kha, Scion of the Seventh Dawn ─ whatever weight that carried at the moment ─ was entirely sick of trudging through snowbanks half her height.

The people of Coerthas had been brusque, prideful and insular ─ nearly as unwelcoming as their environment. She'd heard that, before the Calamity, these highlands were a beautiful, verdant place with a temperate climate. She wondered idly to herself if its people were any milder in those days as well.

These were harsh, bitter days, and the atmosphere here was not helping. She'd also noticed some Ishgardians giving her odd, uncomfortable looks, preferring to speak to her companions. On top of everything else, she'd somehow managed to get herself tangled up in some mess involving accusations of heresy, a crime which these people regarded with frightening seriousness. The accused, thankfully for her at least, had seemed kind and surely innocent of his alleged crime, and had sent her along with a letter of introduction to a member of yet another great noble house.

Yet the trek up past the slopes of Skyfire Locks was cold and steep, and by the time she made it through the outer gates of Camp Dragonhead, not only was it getting dark, but she had snow and ice built up in the crevices of her scales, and she inwardly cursed her lack of foresight in not bringing something thick and heavy to cover her horns with. Her tail, too, was freezing.
