I'd always assumed this book was from the 60s or 70s. It's from 1992 and was a best seller for most of the decade! It's astonishing how recent this stuff was mainstream thought

I'm certainly willing to say the graph of AfD activity is either fake or showing something entirely different, because the time period covers the campaign for several major elections, including one they won, yet there's no visible spike in activity!

Ste Jormur @stejormur.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Come on, this is clearly not real data. The AfD came first in a major election on September 6, there should be a huge visible spike in activity on that day! The original "source" doesn't say where this data is from either

This is a pretty fun game. It's not a huge surprise that I like a) the "so-bad-it's-good" classics and b) sci-fi movies that make big swings, but I'd never really realised how much I hate beloved 90s family movies.
Popular Films that I've given ½ star:

Home Alone, A Goofy Movie, Pooh's Grand Adventure, Space Jam, Cars 2, Cars, Mind Body & Soul, X-Men Apocalypse Unpopular films I've given 5 stars

Birdemic, Troll 2, The Room, Nightmare Sisters, Popatopolis, Cloud Atlas, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Attack the Block

You grow up watching sci-fi films that make "cybernetics" sound like this dark, cool, futuristic, ultra-high technology, and then you finally learn what it is and it's the science of making flowcharts.

Occasionally I guess AI can delight you. Like when you think "Hmm, I want to look up the new MST3k credits song" and instead Google gives you a Latin Choose Your Own Adventure about going on a date to the theatre
We're in the theatre! What would you like to do now?
• Watch the show? (The play is about to start!)
• Say hello to the actors? (They're working on the stage.)
• Find a seat? (Mind where you're going, it's a bit crowded!)

I agree - both she and Misato are just teasing and exploiting Shinji for their own ends, while Rei has no feelings - but to some extent I think that's part of the fantasy. In a more watered down form, there's a lot of "tsundere harasses depressed boy" shit that feels downstream of Shinji/Asuka

Is the combination of a stop sign and distance sign valid? It feels confusing to me - at first glance I'd think I need to stop there (I know in Germany there's a separate advance warning for stop signs, specifically to avoid people stopping in the wrong place)

One of my favourite niche election facts is that the constituency of St Marylebone had two rival Conservative Associations who nominated different candidates that ran against each other. At different times, each was the "official" Conservative branch (and in 1932 the party didn't endorse either!)

Friends fear he's reading every Wikipedia article in the category "Urban legends"
Old "Evolution" meme template. An eagle owl asks "Evolution can you give me big reflective eyes, long horn feathers and silent flight". Evolution (represented by DNA) says "To hunt nocturnal prey?". Owl replies "Yeeees." then (silhouetted with glowing red eyes) "Actually NO. Terrifies humans like a boss"

The bottom of the image shows the Hopkinsville alien, Flatwoods monster, Mothman and Owlman, all of which are believed to have been owls or other nocturnal hunting birds (Mothman looks a lot like a night heron)

Spooky season. Yes, I watched the Michael Flatley spy film. It's a bit dull (an inept mash-up of Casino Royale, Casablanca, and The Night Manager) but people were not lying about the hats. Every time you think you're getting bored, BAM, another even worse fitting hat appears on Flatley's head.
