Fiscal analyst about town. Believes there's no such thing as a guilty pleasure. Was: AZ. Now: MN -- yes, I'm aware it will be colder here, that’s a feature, not a bug. (he/him/cis/het)

This tree looks like they’re a little bit puzzled by the question they’ve just been asked.
Picture of tree where scars from branch trimming look like two eyes and a mouth pursed to the right. (That’s from the tree’s perspective. Left from the viewer’s.)

There are many who aren’t sure if their “If you’re in line” joke was noted here on Bluesky. If you can, please volunteer your time to “cure” those jokes to make sure they’ve been counted.

The only prediction I’ll think about today is that of my uncle, born in Germany in the early 1930s, who while I sat at his dinner table in summer 2016 said in halting but forceful English to me, “Trump is a bad, bad man.” I still think about that monthly. Anyway, vote today if you haven’t yet.

I’m reading “Pride and Prejudice” and I think that I’m going to make reading Jane Austen the week before a major election a new ritual. A lovely tonic.

Could Shohei Ohtani - and *only* Shohei Ohtani - win the World Series? Because that seems like the optimal result for me.

I’ve got too many podcasts to listen to, but if you think I’m going to turn off Pulp’s “Common People” on the radio, you’d be wrong. (Also, pretty sure you can guess my age from this skeet.)

Yesterday’s MN State Fair food: a cup of Martha’s Cookies (probably shouldn’t have tried to eat it all, but, you know, Martha’s); Sweet Corn & Hot Honey Cake (Farmer’s Union; fine but presentation underwhelming); and the Union’s Honey Lavender Lemonade (good but I shouldn’t waste calories on drinks)

Hey MSP peeps, can anyone recommend a good running club for older, slower people like, erm, me? At this point, anything faster than a 10-minute pace is pushing it. Vibe and good natured people more important than the training. Thanks in advance…

My wife was doing a crossword puzzle & the clue was something like “MTV named this Phil Collins hit one of the top 100 videos of the 80s.” She asked me what it might be, and I said probably either “Sussudio” or “In the Air Tonight”…. 1/x

Going some very old files and found this clipping. Still one of the best headlines ever (though it doesn’t make sense unless you read the article attached to it).
1993 Pioneer Press article with headline “Twins get walloped 15-2” and a sub header “Winfield needs two.” In the article itself, Twins manager Tom Kelly is quoted as saying “Now we have to see the headline, ‘Twins get walloped 15-2’ instead of ‘Winfield gets 3000th.’ I don’t think the headline writers will write ‘Winfield needs two.’”

Pi(e) Day final tally: 6 slices of pie at $3.14 each, 2 pizzas at $3.14 each (plus toppings). I placed the pizza order around 3pm, and by the time I picked up the pizzas at 6:15, the place had a hand-scrawled piece paper taped to the door: “NO PIZZA” like it was a horror film.

Cleaning out newspaper clippings my mom saved going back to, like, junior high (I was a very achievement-oriented kid), and can’t stop laughing at this - I’m on the right here. Like, did the photographer take one picture? Were they related to Tim (on the right)? Or was this the best they had?
Picture of two high school kids in park; kid on left has a great smile and open eyes while kid on right (me) is leaning over with a pained smile and closed eyes.

My lukewarm take (pun unintended) on the Tracy Chapman / Luke Combs "Fast Car" duet last night: it was a little bit less than the sum of its parts. I mean, there are few perfect songs, but "Fast Car"? Perfect song.

So glad @jefito.bsky.social is back with Jefitoblog, and while I said my piece about the new Billy Joel track in less than 10 words, Jeff takes about 1,300. (Jeff's is better.) I agree with it all -- it's a good track, average for Joel, and earns its weight by the context of its release.

This thread, along with the thread *it* quote-posts, is useful reading for what to pay attention to (and when) w/r/t legislative bills. Especially in January, the amount of electronic ink spent on bills that won't go anywhere is... frustratingly large.

Given that people took "tweet" and applied it to posts here ("skeets"), will "-eet" be the social media equivalent of "-gate"? Are Threads posts called "threets"? Is Mastodon doomed to fail because they're called "toots" instead of "teets" or "meets" or -- really, this is the best -- "deets"?

When did the meaning of "moral support" become equivalent to "morale support"? Like, at one point did lending moral support mean encouraging someone else not to, like, kill someone? And now it means something like, for example, "hey, sorry your parenting day sucked. Hope tomorrow's better."
