What could a new green iron value chain between Australia and China look like? A new report from RMI and Mission Possible Partnership explores the complementary opportunities for Australia and China to decarbonise iron and steel together.

A public health victory, emissions avoided, but a failure of just transition, with workers left in the lurch. The closure of the Taranto steel plant in Italy is a good example of how courts are intervening to protect community health.

As Canada and the EU look to build closer political and trade ties, green iron could offer an opportunity to lay the foundations for a long-term clean industrial partnership. A recent Financial Times report highlighted ongoing trade irritants between the two sides, including tariffs on nails.

Nippon Steel recently finished relining Blast Furnace No.14 at the Gary Works in Indiana, USA, giving it what could be another 20 years of life, locking in continued emissions and emissions and health problems for the local community.

How much CO2 does a blast furnace emit? How much more carbon does a blast furnace pump out over its extended lifespan when relined? Questions like these can be difficult to answer without a lot of digging through company reports and data, but we’ve got you covered!

👀 One to watch: the conditionalities attached to public funding for thyssenkrupp’s DRI plant in Duisburg are changing. Reuters reports that thyssenkrupp is renegotiating the funding framework for its EUR 3 billion DRI plant in Duisburg, Germany, with hydrogen no longer set to be used initially.

🚨 The pattern continues: ArcelorMittal keeps choosing coal-based blast furnaces over a low-emissions future. With three of the previously idled blast furnaces being brought back to operations in France, Spain and Poland, every blast furnace ArcelorMittal owns in Europe is now operating.

The green steel transition is moving forward, and it is not waiting for incumbent steelmakers to catch up. Two developments this month show growing momentum behind new green steel projects, backed by both investment and demand.

🔊People call for Nippon Steel to build a better future. Bob Tribble spent decades working at Gary Works, Indiana, starting out as an electrician before moving into planning and environmental roles.

Amid the Middle East energy crisis, Japanese heavy industries including Nippon Steel are at a crossroads: will they use their powerful influence towards a promising net-zero future centered around renewable energy or fall into fossil fuel lock-in?

🔥 When the company puts coal first for its own business sake, people always get left behind. @nippon-steel.bsky.social wants to be “the world’s best steelmaker”, but the path it is following in Japan and now in the United States is locking in the worst way of making steel with coal.

Nippon Steel is counting on carbon capture and storage (CCS) to keep its blast furnaces running, but this unproven and expensive technology is a huge gamble. ⚠️ It won’t reduce emissions enough ⏳ Even if successful, reductions will come too late 🌍 Blast furnaces will keep polluting for far longer

ArcelorMittal is not accelerating decarbonisation. It is structurally limiting it. The company’s Sustainability Report 2025 confirms that investment in low-emissions iron and steelmaking will be sequenced and tightly constrained within existing spending limits:

In the first SteelWatch Corporate Scorecard, most steelmakers sit in a tight “peloton” scoring just 21-34/100. Net-zero targets are common, but rarely backed by real transition actions. SSAB (46.2) is ahead, followed by thyssenkrupp (41.9), with plans for green iron & BF retirement. #ESGSteel
