Brendan’s talk show appearance is to die for, Richard’s fiddling about with a gent’s new extension, and Steven’s developed a penchant for plushies. Strangely, all these things lead back to the machinations of one Mr Teddy Bear… #TheAvengers #Podcast open.spotify.com/episode/1KX9...
Mr Teddy Bear (Bernard Goldman) considers his options. He's a short, stout, dark haired and goateed man in evening dress. He holds a cigar in his right hand.

14 teams means 26 league matches - exactly half a calendar year. 6 domestic cup weekends per season, 2 weeks for a rationalised Club World Cup, 3 weeks break over winter, 4 weeks of internationals in June, 4 weeks break in July, 7 week preseason Aug to mid Sep - there are your other 26 weeks 🙂

You’re right, Jon. The solution is; less (quantity of matches) is more (quality of football). I envision 14 team top tiers across Europe with midweeks reserved exc for a max of 17 UEFA matches. 3 week winter break from Xmas. Internationals only in June. No football at all in July. Won’t ever happen.

The Time Meddler quietly dismantles the Doctor as a singular figure in his universe - which doesn’t work for me without my having to squint to see the Monk as an earlier incarnation of the Master. Jolly and fun, people say, while sweeping under the rug the Horrible Histories rape… again! Not good.

The Chase resembles a very contemporaneous ‘60s pop-art collage, constantly remixing its own mythology like a proto-Rick & Morty multiverse romp-but without quite the televisual syntax required to do so. It’s less about coherence though, and more about how far the format can stretch before snapping.

The Space Museum starts like a brilliant time paradox thought experiment straight out of HG Wells’ The Time Machine - before collapsing into something far, far more trivial and banal. The idea is the story, and once it’s spent in part one, so is the entire narrative. Still, Vikki: “FOR REVOLUTION!”

The Crusade refuses the simple binaries of most historical drama, landing somewhere between chronicle and critique. It feels closer to The Histories than heroic myth, observing rather than judging. But all the Doctor and co. can do is run away from history, exposing the limits of the genre in DW.

The Web Planet is pure 60s avant-garde, down to Insect Movement by Roslyn de Winter and Music by Les Structures Sonores. More like Waiting for Godot, privileging mood over movement. But much experimental theatre, it’s admirable in theory and punishing in practice. I prefer “Doctor Who and the Zarbi”

The Romans plays like a lost decades-earlier pilot for Blackadder in antiquity and a too-late-in-the-run Carry On, gleefully puncturing the idea of historical prestige and turning empire into farce-but it means it really hasn’t aged at all well by 2026. Another downplayed historical rape? No thanks!

The Rescue is practically Aristotle in miniature, obeying unity of time, place, and action with ruthless efficiency. It’s storytelling stripped to function, which makes its emotional beats land with surprising clarity. But who were those Magic Di(l)doans at the end?!!

The Dalek Invasion of Earth feels less like sci-fi and more like post-war European cinema, with echoes of occupied cities and moral exhaustion. It’s closer to Visconti-esque neorealism than Daleks-In-Space kids telly, which is why its images still carry weight.

Steven B @steedstylin.bsky.social · 23/03/2026
Planet of Giants plays like Cold War-era paranoia filtered through a school science pan, where the real threat is mostly the mundane rather than the sci fi extraordinary. Almost Kafkaesque in how the scale shrinks but the anxiety expands.

Loved this, esp the Terrance Dicks Target novelisation discussion. I think Peter is absolutely right when he says that there is a (first) golden age for the Targets. For me, it runs all the way up to Jan ‘79 with the 128-page Hand of Fear Dicks book, the 46th in the range. The 47th? Invisible Enemy!

Would it be blasphemous if I were to argue - genuinely - that the Rani is just the Master in Missy form and that “Mark of the Rani”was the first ever multi-Master story? Her Omega scheme seems no better or worse than any of the Ainley Master’s hare-brained plots. (I’ll get back in my box now.)

What a lovely idea! That early Avengers ‘grit’ provided by the Steed and Keel episodes does seem to wear away over time, though I’m not sure it isn’t a good thing. Also, Steed and a female co-lead is such a potent and recognisable pairing it’d be hard to not present it that way, if rebooted.
