I’ll set the record straight since I was the radar controller and this has gotten out of hand.

I own surface to 160 and I’m training. Hive is at 180 westbound and tells the ZME controller they’re descending. At the point that Hive starts that descent, they are already below 170 making it impossible to maintain 1000 feet between any IFR aircraft before the ZME controller has a chance to contact me, which they did on the IVSR (telephone), after Hive has passed 150.

Normal protocol would be to issue 170 then I accept the handoff and I issue further descent.

I said to my trainee, “they’re descending into our airspace without coordination so you might as well take radar on them.”

The fact that I had no traffic is besides the point. I cannot let aircraft dictate their altitudes without ensuring separation between my traffic and other airspace.

Having said that, Hive absolutely needed to descend. If you cannot maintain an ATC clearance or assigned altitude do to an inflight equipment malfunction, declare an emergency, squawk 7700, say Pan Pan etc. It triggers so many alerts and focus inside a radar room that everyone is aware of a potential issue and can plan/act accordingly.

Knowing that Hive couldn’t de-ice and it caused a deviation from a clearance and there was precipitation ahead (not depicted on this playback), I declared the emergency.

I wasn’t trying to lecture, just get a grasp of the situation IN THE MOMENT, and explain why there are procedures to follow so controllers can maintain separation between all aircraft. In my opinion, in this situation, a quick explanation given the equipment issue is more valuable than giving a phone number to call.

Not at any point did I think the pilots were being inappropriate or argumentative. They responded professionally in my opinion and we had a quick chat. Had I been busier, the explanation wouldn’t have been as thorough however the weather not depicted made it a slow day.

For anyone who wants to say it’s ATC vs pilots or FAA vs Air Force, WRONG. I was Air Force for 7 years. Over 80% of us here are prior military. We love a break from the monotony of FedEx and flight schools that the military aviators provide.

Pilots and controllers are working together towards the common goal of getting from A to B as safe and efficiently as possible. It’s that simple.

I hope Hive comes back for practice approaches, or anyone for that matter. We have a lot of runways, come use them.

speaking of crushing it, abbott animation gets better every time. The little details like the dust wipe streaks on the TV, the reflection, and the cinematographic choice to have the bottle of hand sanitizer in the foreground out of focus? incredible. as always, compliments to the chef.
