A message from the Jubilee Club We were delighted to get our first barge trip of the year underway, with our Monday members enjoying a lovely day out on the water. There was plenty of chat, laughter, and of course a chance to sit back and enjoy the scenery. #canals #Ratho #seagulltrustcruises

Thanks to Richard Millar Chief Operating Officer at Scottish Canals, and Tommy Thomson and his team for persisting in finding the hidden tree trunks in the murky waters of the Union canal. Our first "grounding" was with St John Edinburgh after the fitting of her brand new "powerful" engine.

The Trust is very grateful to these two young men who helped pull Edinburgh off an underwater obstruction on Tuesday & Wednesday close to the climbing centre where the branches are in the water. They didn't need to stop & help but we are truly grateful for their time & energy. #scottishcanals

Update from our maintenance volunteers - Edinburgh’s new engine arrived on Monday & we started work on it immediately. This morning, we installed it in the engine bay and started to assemble everything that goes round it. We expect to have it operational by the end of the week, but requires testing.

It’s here! The good news is the new engine for St. John Edinburgh arrived yesterday. The bad news (for them) is that our highly skilled maintenance team are going to be extremely busy in the coming days! #canal #Ratho #Scottishcanals #Seagulltrustcruises #Edinburgh

Just a thought. At Ratho the arch of Rusacks Bridge has rope marks from when canal barges were pulled by horses. The building in the photograph was once used as the stables so it could be a suitable location for a horse statue but probably too narrow. #canals #Ratho #horse #seagulltrustcruises

Spotted on the Union canal a new piece of equipment deployed by Scottish canals but what is its purpose?

121

Seagull Trust Cruises - Ratho @stcratho.bsky.social · 17/05/2026

The 250m long and 26m high Avon Aqueduct, built for the Union Canal near Linlithgow. Rather than using puddling clay, it has an iron trough to carry the water, allowing it to be a much more slender structure with hollow piers that used a lot less stone. - thanks to @is_glasgow on Twitter

The swans are back on the canal at Ratho, a sure sign that spring is settling in. Our boats aren’t the only ones enjoying the water. If you’re joining us for a cruise soon, you might just spot them along the way.
