I am happy that it does seem, despite the layoffs, people were taken care of.

Like I am very pro-union, but this whole ordeal was a clusterfuck and frankly embarrassing. It really feels like CWA's unionization approach was a bad match for DF's company culture and created a lot of mistrust from day one. Not seeing most would be ineligible and flagging it as an issue is bad.

> One union-supportive person pointed out [...] the union would have been able to negotiate with Microsoft for severance like the other unions were doing. However, that same person acknowledged that a union may not have been able to secure as good a deal as Schafer had. Unintentionally hilarious

This guy is weird as shit but nobody on this site could ever get me to hate him. Like, his fellow 1%ers are focused on a global fascist project, meanwhile Bryan is just like "erm, actually, I've been measuring my wife's morning clit length for the last 128 months and you are mistaken." Amazing.

Bought produce, unpacked it, and realized it was all slimy. Tossed it, but decided to do the responsible thing and go back to let the store know so they could check the others just in case. Don't want anyone to get sick, you know? The staff were, unfortunately, teens who couldn't have cared less.

Tonight I had the extremely fun experience of macOS refusing to open apps, having terminal programs hang indefinitely, and then losing the ability to log in. After some time, Claude and I narrowed it down to rustc creating >9M temp files and choking out dirhelper, blocking absolutely everything.

If I can continue being a crazed sicko, but there could be overlap with the above and this:

matt @stavola.xyz · 09/10/2026
It may end up being something a bit too much for humans to effectively utilize, but agents might be really into the whole mix-match-meld thing and actively make it part of their workflows. Like "help peer" but npm? Maybe this is dumb or batshit, but I think it's an interesting thing to explore!

matt @stavola.xyz · 09/10/2026
I've been thinking of them as elaborations or maybe lemmas. If your vcs/package manager/language was sufficiently smart enough, you should be able to publish and consume things that are essentially "this package with this other stuff." Not specifying a commit, but rather the material itself.
100
matt @stavola.xyz · 09/10/2026
Of course this model works, it's what we've done forever, but there has to be some in-between. You can almost dream of a model where you essentially have a third, more permissionless, operation. One that doesn't require you to accept disproportionate burden or sell the value of your contributions.

matt @stavola.xyz · 09/10/2026
With a fork, you can "just" push but that doesn't make the decision necessarily lighter. You are now committing to owning the project as a whole, not just the changes. Congrats, now you're the maintainer!Enjoy keeping things up to date with upstream and dealing with your own merge/fork scenarios.
100
matt @stavola.xyz · 09/10/2026
With a merge, you're waiting on the maintainers to agree to adopt changes. This means proving perceived value, ensuring you meet some bar of quality, conforming to an opinionated set of requirements, et cetera. Often you will go back and forth with multiple rounds, with no guarantee of completion.
100
matt @stavola.xyz · 09/10/2026
I feel like it's incredibly limiting how merges (collaborative) and forks (disputative) are the only two fundamental operations for evolving open source software projects. Agents work really well up until they require either, then they are at a chokepoint requiring real buy-in from multiple parties.

I hate to xpost from Twitter, but @tinyclouds.org doesn't post here. Really looks like the motivation is a complete philosophical shift to celld/Workers. I'm skeptical, to say the least, but I guess this is kind of a blind spot for me. I'm a big fan of Cap'n Proto and I know Workers builds on it.
Screenshot of a post on Twitter by Ryan Dahl (@rough__sea), verified, with a cartoon tiger avatar. The post reads: i feel like people do not grok how important celld is. it's scalable applications of arbitrary complexity. the only dependency is s3. once you see it, you'll realize there's no point to traditional javascript runtimes in serving applications - only for build processes (eg bundling) and scripting. the networking and scaleability are deeply rooted not only in the distributed runtime (celld), but in the programming model itself (largely kenton's design). I wasn't quite sure when I started celld how well this could be made to work, but we've been running it in bigger capacities and getting user reports over the last months. Actually handles load surprisingly well. (any experience in the comments to share?) because the programming model does not expose the underlying linux system, you can actually think of celld as a distributed operating system - running in user space of linux. it only runs one program / doesn't support multi-tenant, but it has system services like an operating system. it's all about networking - i like to think of it as the practical modern version of plan9 or even erlang beam. I really championed Deno in a lot of stuff, especially at work. Especially at work. While I'm sure there are going to be *some* community members that step up, leaving the baby on the cliffside like this has a predictable outcome. Anyway, all the bun guys at my day job are probably celebrating.

matt @stavola.xyz · 09/10/2026
That part of the post reads like "lol ggpo!" as if the project remaining open source was enough. I would've liked to see something like the creation of an org to shepherd Deno or at least something that indicated more details to come. Anything that would've showed that more thought went into this!

This is basically my stance regarding the weirdos that are all-in on AI-hate. I am not convinced that Claude can feel anything when you hurl abuse at it. However, I am certain that fantasizing about violence against an LLM and inventing slurs for it is neither a good use of time nor very healthy.

It definitely wouldn't hurt for some well known ATProto nerd to go on Conan or something and name drop ~5 atmosphere apps and discuss how they all work together.

matt @stavola.xyz · 08/10/2026
You need to lead with the "here is what it can do" and have those things "on hand" before you can really get people on board. Leave the proselytizing at the door, as most people simply do not care about the philosophical aspect. Instead, show them what they're missing in the internective future.

The only carve out for this imo is the term PDS. I feel like it still needs its email moment, but it'll come. A PDS should be a thing you hold and not a term of technology. For that, we need PDS clients that have a good and standard UX, like your GMail inbox. And apps, lots of apps.

Success for the Atmosphere isn't when the avg person knows words like ATProto. Success looks like mom wondering why her FB feed doesn't have photos her kids posted on Grain. Success looks like a neighbor asking why he can only use the official Reddit app. Success is when silos look and feel weird.

matt @stavola.xyz · 07/10/2026
I'm with you. My position is that fundamental protocol improvements (like spaces) are valuable, but we do need spoonfeedy things (like Spaces™) to keep the average person engaged with the Atmosphere; bsky should leverage whatever they can to keep people here and funnel them to other apps long term.

matt @stavola.xyz · 07/10/2026
That's why I think many people are into this as a feature: you have to do significantly less work. You or I can set up the former, maybe even make time for it, but someone who just wants to make a group for the Rangers fans in their neighborhood doesn't want to bother. They stick with FB groups :(
000
matt @stavola.xyz · 07/10/2026
The thing that makes community spaces possible also makes private profiles possible for bsky. Many people want both!

Right now my ability to travel is quite limited, so the possibility of having mahjong only a couple of blocks from me is extremely enticing. I fall for those posters every single time!

On one hand, it's kinda cool to see mahjong take off in the US. On the other, it's a bit sad to see almost exclusively American mahjong. Whenever I see a mahjong poster in my neighborhood, I always get prematurely excited before realizing it's not riichi. All mahjong is good, but more riichi pls.

Like why are people so addicted to fedposting/virtue signaling? How many people even disagree with the core point? Bsky is literally the choir you are preaching at! What do you even gain by posting something in flagrant violation of the TOS? Is it just to get a tmp suspension to pin on your chest?
000
matt @stavola.xyz · 05/10/2026
Would be nice if the people who decry "shit moderation" (see: suspension for explicit death threats of public figures) stopped complaining and ran their own site. You can make the TOS whatever you want and defend your own decisions. With ATProto you won't even lose anything in the migration :)
