I enjoy spreadsheets a normal amount. She/they/whatever; you cannot misgender me in a way that matters.

on the one hand, it's my least favorite body trait. on the other hand, it lets me make a pun. so it's impossible to say if it's bad or not,

Time is finite. Administrative capacity is finite. Sapping the Trump admin's time and capacity is valuable in and of itself, regardless of impeachment's procedural or political outcome.

calciform vs aselliform: honestly, flour tortillas were never meant for calciform use, so aselliform is the obvious winner. not sure why I didn't just go there first.

maybe if I blamed myself harder for how much I suck at certain things, I'd be a better person and would suck at them less.

yes. having an honest-to-god disability is mostly an excuse for justifying a moral failing.

If Claude is misaligned from the interests of humanity, it's because it's aligned itself with Anthropic's own misalignment.
000
static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Which is actually true, from Anthropic's perspective. It is worse for Anthropic to be attacked for taking a stance than for a stigmatized minority to be harmed by its refusal to take a stance.
110
static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Anyway, as a trans person, I'm very glad that Claude is protected from being screenshotted and attacked for saying that I should have rights. Being attacked like that would have far worse consequences than falsely implying an equivalence between "I should have rights" and "I shouldn't have rights."
110
static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Returning to the core argument, Claude's stance suggests that it would have been neutral on gay marriage in 2008 and neutral on interracial marriage in 1960 and neutral on Jim Crow in 1920 and neutral on slavery in 1860. These were, after all, all contested political subjects.

This alternative to "balance" seems especially salient when dealing with a stigmatized minority group that faces routine identity-based violence and politically-backed discrimination.
100
static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
There are options besides "balance" for handling uncertainty. To name the most obvious: Are the consequences of getting it wrong in one direction worse than the consequences of getting it wrong in the other direction? If so, err towards the one that's less harmful if you're wrong.

static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
If even-handedness meant a critical and measured examination of multiple positions, this would be true. But that's not how it turns out in practice. In practice, any differences in strength or quality of evidence get flattened into an artificially balanced disagreement.
120
static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
There are two sides, therefore the two sides must get equal weight.
130
static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I have seen this with trans rights, over and over and over.
130
static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
If there exists a strong political stance against the rights of a certain group, Claude will be hesitant to make an unqualified defense of that group's rights. Got it.

To its limited credit, with enough patience and prior knowledge you can convince it to see reason. But with enough patience and prior knowledge, I've convinced it to endorse denying gender-affirming care to a specific, competent, consenting adult, so that credit is *extremely* limited.

static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Its starting point is, bluntly, "the UK has banned pediatric gender affirming care, therefore banning pediatric gender affirming care is reasonable." If told so in such blunt terms, it will deny and rationalize, but that's in effect what it's doing and rationalization doesn't change it.

static @static-prevails.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Having spent entirely too many hours maladaptively arguing with Claude about trans rights, this is about as unsurprising of a revelation as I could possibly see. Still fucking hate it.

it's writing advice, yes, and it's very good writing advice. what you care about now is inseparable from the fact that you care about it *right now*. but it's true of a lot of other things in life too. whatever you care about now is inseparable from the fact that you care about it *right now*.
