In 2006, I was 20 and went to every MLB park one summer. We saw Justin Verlander in Detroit. After today, there will be no players from that trip still playing 20 years later. An entire generation has passed. In 2006, 7 players had also played 20 years before that, in 1986.

If you look at it by innings, in 1980, each pitcher was able to cover an average of 100 innings. In 2025 it's half that, but we're going to add almost 3,000 more innings to cover: Innings pitcher per pitcher: 1980 - 100 1993 - 80 1998 - 78 2008 - 67 2018 - 54 2025 - 49

Where are the pitchers going to come from for expansion? In 1998, we needed 37 new pitchers. If we added 2 at the current number, we'd need 60 new Major League pitchers: Pitchers used per team: 1980 - 14.6 1993 - 18.1 1998 - 18.6 2008 - 21.7 2018 - 26.6 2025 - 29.1 www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/...
