Reading books about revolution hit different these days.

It's been a minute since a book has made me so angry I was tempted to throw it across the room. I might have, if I wasn't afraid of breaking my kindle. 💙📚

Another day, another set of inaccurate API documentation that completely screws weeks of architecture conversations by not marking required fields as required. Why. Please, WHY?

I got a raise this year. John Scalzi reminds me that my money can do some good locally. Time to search out some local organizations doing good DEI work in the very red area I live in. I can't afford donations his size, but I can afford $25/month to a few places.

Introducing my daughter to the wonder that is the 1980s Anne of Green Gables. I knew she'd love and relate to Anne because they share an amazing imagination and sense of drama. After the first 10 minutes I realized that Anne is so clearly ADHD that there are medical articles about it.

Yesterday I took 15 minutes of my Archives and Collective Memory course to explain the firing of AOTUS and the resignation of Deputy AOTUS. I’m not one who wades into politics in class lightly, but it was very important fo be honest about this from the standpoint of the profession. 1/4

I can chop wood and tell you how much of it you need to last a winter, butcher a cow, and grow a half decent garden. I can sew. Plus I know a whole lot of people who did the whole homestead thing before it was cool. Also I'm real good at finding useful info in books.

I stumbled into the Merciful Crow duology this weekend and adored it. The end is particularly satisfying to the mood of the moment. It's got romantasy vibes, but is heavier on the world and plot than romance, and has one of the coolest magic systems. Reminds me of Mistborn and One Dark Window. 📚💙

Out of everything I've read in the past two weeks, this gave me the deepest sense of absolute fear and dread:
Comment: Would love to hear your thoughts on how the current situation/moment (Trump broadly and recent days) ranks as far as dangerous/threatening time in US history.

Response from Heather Cox Richardson: This is the most dangerous threat the U.S. has ever faced.

1. Programming gives you the joy of hacking. 2. Testing raises confidence in its correctness. 3. Documenting helps users understand it all. In the case of public software, like OSS, to me, a complete programmer commits to the three of them.

This thread about companies that focus on 'technical' workers to the exclusion of others is great, but this one struck me. I've seen engineers say they could get more done with fewer meetings, and then end up flailing because no one understood the context of anything. GOOD conversation is vital.

This whole thread. It was enlightening to move from higher ed to tech and to realize that things everyone I knew could do - public speaking, breaking down complicated ideas, leading productive discussions - are skills almost no one in my new job had. And they aren't less important in tech.

Over the last year I've been trying to develop a fairly complete "top level" categorization of software errors. Would really appreciate some feedback on what you think of the categories I've come up with and their level of clarity. The purpose of this is to build a shared mental model.

The more I use GenAI coding tools, the more I am convinced keeping to "traditional" software engineering practices is what works most productive here. As in 10x more productive. E.g. - Small changes - Test that the change works before moving on - (unit) tests wherever you can

Exactly my experience, too. I use GitHub copilot with Ruby, which I know pretty well, and JavaScript, which I'm learning. It's led me down real wrong paths in js. It didn't get the chance in Ruby, because I know when it's won't.

I'm a library girl till the day I die. Books don't come into my possession until I want to reread it, usually for the third time. It's mostly because I grew up without ever having enough money for book fair, and libraries still gave me the world, but it's also just because I love libraries.

Confession: I'm a self-taught dev who started as a hobbyist and now works full time. I have never once completed a tutorial or read more than a couple chapters of a book on code. I always get bored and wander off to break things instead. Maybe it's not as efficient, but it's a lot more fun!

I found this too. What's scary is that over my 15 years teaching, I saw an increasing rate of information nihilism. They went from healthy skepticism to believing that nothing was trustworthy. By the time I left the field in 2021, many treated source evaluation as meaningless and hopeless.

One more today. I like a lot of things about this, though I still need to work on my composition. I wish I hadn't accidentally changed color palettes in the middle. One of the things I struggle with most with watercolors is looking at the paint on my pallet and knowing what it will look like dried.
