What’s your favorite example of someone *doing*, rather than just theorizing, immanent critique?

The first class I TAed for (in 2011) the professor asked the students to use Twitter hashtags to ask questions if they were shy and for the TAs to monitor the hashtag. Week one there weee students tweeting about porn

I think I overheard that it was on its way to some guy’s apartment in Harlem but that could have been a ruse

You know how sometimes you get on a train and there’s some liquid on the floor that you assume is beer or soda but honestly who knows? Well I just watched a turtle pee on the floor of an R train so now you can add that to your list of possible liquids

The prevailing case law effectively nullifies this aspect of the constitution

There have been past attempts to prevent the executive from usurping congressional war powers and they have not been successful. It’s not a Trump problem but it is a longstanding Republican judge problem

But “pick some texts you want to think about and get a handful of interested colleagues to think about them with you” sounds like my favorite part of philosophy

Well in fairness I never got to do it so maybe I’m imagining it inaccurately!

It’s the thing I most regret not being able to do (perhaps tied for the #1 spot with teaching grad seminars)

I took finreg with him and he was really great. I kept going to his office hours to try out vaguely heterodox Econ arguments I didn’t really understand but picked up from Twitter and he was always a good sport. Glad to hear he’s an ally (if not, I don’t think, a practitioner) of LPE!

The independence of public radio is an optimistic comp but the freakout over tiktok during Biden’s lame duck period made me more worried about that kind of thing than before. If LLMs seem scary and powerful and influential rather than benign and useful, easier to see them get the TikTok treatment

I don’t love the idea of a cabinet official instructing the public lab to downweight pro-Palestinian ideas increase china-as-geopolitical foe themes so it’s not winning by a mile for me, but still my first pick I think

In 1 the model reflects our values back to us by volume of their expression in the training set, ensuring that the tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the chatbots of the living. 3 sells us sponsored products and maybe tries to convince us of South African white genocide

Model weighting is an interesting synecdoche for debates about value-neutrality in general. There’s no value-neutral way to set the weights, so you can: 1. naturalize status quo usage patterns, 2. government/democratic weights, 3. commercial/capitalist weights. Gun to my head it’s 2, but not happily

Screenshot of a passage from the NYT article about Paul, Weiss, which reads: “Pressure grew from rivals as well. A partner at a competitor, Wachtell Lipton, mistakenly copied Mr. Karp on an email discussion about trying to poach Paul Weiss lawyers.
Mr. Epshteyn bragged that he now had leverage over Mr. Karp, according to “Regime Change,” a book by the Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan. Mr. Epshteyn told a friend: “I’m in a pretty good place now. I’m the chairman of Paul Weiss.””

Sxsw going from a cool-kid up-and-coming music fest to a podcast live taping fest is a very funny synecdoche

Vox podcast interviewing millennials about their boomer parents “hoarding” wealth and these people are making themselves so painfully unsympathetic. You’re worried that if *both* of your cars break down at the same time it’ll be harder? Shut the fuck up and take the bus

Look forward to reading the draft when I have time, but I’m intrigued by the suggestion here in particular! Is there a tweet-length explanation of how you do this with 263A?

I suspect that junior associates at my firm who come in prepared to be stewards of LLMs and not to have to do the kind of analog work that junior associates have historically been prepared to do are unpleasantly surprised

I think grades are stupid and being commandeered to do employer screening is antithetical to actual education so in a way I’m an accelerationist about AI devaluing grades. But I think you are overestimating how much the tools are being used at firms as of now

Everyone who has already asked a question and since lost interest, and everyone who is desperate to get theirs in, will always press, so Q&A will take about 20 seconds with zero questions actually asked. In other words, it’s perfect

Saw a “why is he treating people who violated the social contract as if they’re ordinary citizens” reaction from one of the most loathsome center-left law posters and thought I was going to puke

Is there an “if your Ilya be Somin… if your Ilya be Shapiro…” mnemonic for remembering which is the principled libertarian and which one is the racist hack?

It could have been great IMO. Tried to do just a hair too much, got a little big for its britches (plus the extremely silly season 2 twist that they spent the whole season teasing until it wasn’t really a twist)

When you’ve graded a few thousand of them it becomes painfully clear that no one is learning anything of value through the exercise except the 2-3% that actually do put some effort into it

Writing done thoughtfully and with care is important to thinking. Spouting off some more or less grammatical crap that isn’t int need to communicate anything in particular? We’ll probably be fine if we let AI do that
140
J @stareaskesis.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
I think some of you are overestimating the educational payoff of “bullshitting” a 10-page paper overnight without thinking very hard about the subject matter, and the kind of writing you regard yourself as having learned could in fact be obsoleted by AI without any social loss

I would like the record to reflect that the shirt is J Press but the collar roll is unfortunately not up to their usual standard (exacerbated by the fact that it’s also a hair tight around my neck and pulls up the tops)
