What’s your favorite example of someone *doing*, rather than just theorizing, immanent critique?

You know how sometimes you get on a train and there’s some liquid on the floor that you assume is beer or soda but honestly who knows? Well I just watched a turtle pee on the floor of an R train so now you can add that to your list of possible liquids

Model weighting is an interesting synecdoche for debates about value-neutrality in general. There’s no value-neutral way to set the weights, so you can: 1. naturalize status quo usage patterns, 2. government/democratic weights, 3. commercial/capitalist weights. Gun to my head it’s 2, but not happily

Screenshot of a passage from the NYT article about Paul, Weiss, which reads: “Pressure grew from rivals as well. A partner at a competitor, Wachtell Lipton, mistakenly copied Mr. Karp on an email discussion about trying to poach Paul Weiss lawyers.
Mr. Epshteyn bragged that he now had leverage over Mr. Karp, according to “Regime Change,” a book by the Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan. Mr. Epshteyn told a friend: “I’m in a pretty good place now. I’m the chairman of Paul Weiss.””

Vox podcast interviewing millennials about their boomer parents “hoarding” wealth and these people are making themselves so painfully unsympathetic. You’re worried that if *both* of your cars break down at the same time it’ll be harder? Shut the fuck up and take the bus

Is there an “if your Ilya be Somin… if your Ilya be Shapiro…” mnemonic for remembering which is the principled libertarian and which one is the racist hack?

I think some of you are overestimating the educational payoff of “bullshitting” a 10-page paper overnight without thinking very hard about the subject matter, and the kind of writing you regard yourself as having learned could in fact be obsoleted by AI without any social loss

My birthday is tomorrow and this morning I woke up to a google scholar alert, which is the perfect priceless birthday gift for someone with a pretty comfortable salary. Thanks, Keshav!

Far be it from me to get in the way of using current events to litigate longstanding grievances between social media power users but I am skeptical that posts by the Pod Save America hosts, Ryan Grim, and Matt Stoller had that much influence on the Maine senate primary

If you’ve ever wondered whether you could generate a productive conversation about the relationship between two scholarly subfields by gathering embittered adherents to one of them who share a resentment for increasing popularity of the the other, I think the answer is “no”

Saw @bradlander.bsky.social riding a Citibike in a suit and tie this morning on 9th St. in Gowanus, presumably on the way to his trial. Looking forward to being able to say “I saw my congressman riding a Citibike past my house” in a few months!

I was pretty skeptical of that Yale report on trust just based on the snips I saw floating around, but now that I’ve heard the author interviewed on a podcast I am no longer skeptical

The problem with woke academics is that they reflexively impute hidden ideological motives for people they think are below them to support convenient causal explanations for social phenomena without any attempt at rigor

99% seems high but people on here (especially ones that went to the same law schools but got elite public interest jobs) seem too quick to insist that since most law isn’t biglaw the criticisms in that NYT don’t apply. Lots of non-biglaw lawyering serves the same kind of interests on a smaller scale

The worst part of the latest legal academia discourse to me personally is that I keep being unwillingly exposed to the term “normative priors”

Personally I use both websites because it is my firm conviction that it does not matter at all where I scroll. I spend more time on the other one because there’s more stuff in interested in. Lazy populism about beer is not one of the things that interests me, however

Watching Daredevil season 3 and I just do not believe that Murdock keeps losing to this guy. They did nothing to establish that this man has anything approaching the training required to repeatedly best someone who spent his childhood training with a ninja, other than that he had a mean slider

I’ve recently become aware that the Democratic Party has anointed a spokesman named “Hasan Piker”, but it’s not yet clear to me what I should think about this. Can anyone recommend a dozen long-form online magazine articles about whether he is good or bad

Anyone got a good quick read/overview of what “center right” actually means in Hungary? Same substantive views as Orban but believes in democracy/institutjons? Or further to the left on certain issues—immigration, LGBTQ rights, higher taxes/social safety net, energy transition/climate, EU/Brussels?

I saw people talking about how the Twitter CEO fixed the algorithm and the “For You” tab was finally usable again for the first time in years, so I switched over (for the first time in years) and there, at the top of the feed, was an Obama tweet

I was pretty skeptical of “values lock-in” (along with the rest of the longtermist framework) but I am starting to worry that people ostensibly working under the banner of longtermism are (unintentionally?) advancing the cause of locking in hyper-capitalist nerd fascism

Haven’t seen PHM yet (going tonight actually) but the “Andy Weir doesn’t think SF should be political” discourse is especially funny to me because The Martian is my guilty pleasure pick-me-up watch precisely because of the heavy handed enlightenment cosmopolitanism of it

Career idea for former tech workers: home houseplant consultant. Reasonable fee to come over, look at all of your plants, and tell you what to do with them. I would never admit to spending money on this but I would totally spend money on this and there have to be hundreds if not thousands like me

The worst people you know feel emboldened by the Trump II cultural moment to use slurs with relish. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, feels emboldened to stop being a quirky cipher and lean into being aggressively basic

I’ve seen the charts of global infant mortality and stuff so I accept that this is not the worst time in human history, but I do think it is possibly the most embarrassing time in human history. Dignity and self-respect nearing all-time lows
