Swapped the Bumpboxx BB-777 for a classic SONY CMT-CP300 in my bedroom. It sounds exactly like I hoped the BB would. With a dual cassette deck, 3-CD changer, tuner, and real wood speakers, it’s the perfect bedroom setup.
A silver Sony CMT-CP300 stereo system with a dual cassette deck and 3-CD changer, flanked by two wooden speakers with grey grilles, sitting on a patterned surface.

The assembly quality proved reasonably solid. Regarding sound, Dolby has clearly withheld licensing for its time-based audio cassette technology for quite a while. The impression will need time to settle.

Three records came with me out of Romania — bought there after I left Ukraine because of the war, before Canada was even a plan. This is one of them: The Lemon Twigs, Everything Harmony. Some things you carry across borders because you need them, not because they're useful.
An album sleeve on a white wall above a black turntable. The sleeve is The Lemon Twigs' Everything Harmony: a brick apartment building with fire escapes, the title in red serif letters arched across the top of the facade, two long-haired musicians standing on a fire escape at the right, the band name in black at the bottom. Below, on a light wood surface, a record spins under the closed dust cover, a silver weight on the spindle and an orange cartridge on the tonearm.

I don’t know how you ended up with that. My Bell home internet is $82/month for the Fibe 3.0 package (3 Gbps up/down). I guess you have to know how to negotiate. Of course, I'd prefer to just pay, say, $40/month for 1 Gbps, but we have what we have.

A day off that lands on a Monday asks for something very beautiful. Destroyer's Kaputt, side one, no plans.
A hand holds the sleeve of Destroyer’s “Kaputt” in a protective outer bag: a grainy black-and-white photograph taken at a lookout, where four people dressed in white stand at a stone parapet above a city with mountains behind it, a fifth sits on the parapet, and three empty benches fill the foreground. Behind, in the room, a turntable with the blue record and a floorstanding speaker.Overhead view of a blue marbled record spinning on a turntable: light grey label with the handwritten Destroyer logo and “Side One”, with the tonearm, black headshell and yellow cartridge entering the frame on the right.Round holographic hype sticker on the shrinkwrap: TURNTABLE LAB repeated around the rim; in the centre “2021”, “EDITION of 500”, large “EXCLUSIVO”, and below the numbers 673855036939 and MRG369-TTL.

CA$39.95 for a sealed copy. On Discogs the same Royal Grape 2xLP runs CA$200–300 shipped to Canada. Neal Francis, Francis Comes Alive: recorded live to tape at Thalia Hall, eleven people on stage. Opened it, put it straight on the turntable.

Finally got my copy of Family Worship Center’s “Only Visiting”. Been waiting for this one!
A hand holds a brown cardboard record mailer, printed “Mighty Music Mailer — hassle free mailer for 1–2 LP records, Bags Unlimited, MLP1.” The flap is sealed with black packing tape branded CorpoRat Industries, CorpoRat Printshop and CorpoRat Records, with cartoon rat logos and the slogans “This unholy trinity is your creative salvation” and “Deviants, derelicts and degenerates rejoice!” The framed Stevie Nicks poster is on the wall behind.A hand holds up the “Family Worship Center — Only Visiting” LP sleeve. The cover art shows a stone archway cut out as an arched window, revealing a blue sky with eyes and a green tree on a checkerboard floor; two planets ringed with piano keys float on either side, a smiling glass pitcher drifts at lower left, and the title runs along an orange band at the bottom. A framed black-and-white Stevie Nicks poster hangs on the wall behind.A black Sony turntable on a light wood table, dust cover raised, playing a translucent blue-green marbled LP with a yellow stylus tracking the outer grooves. Propped against the white wall behind it is the album sleeve: “Family Worship Center — Only Visiting,” showing a stone archway framing a blue sky with a pair of eyes, a green tree standing on a black-and-white checkerboard floor, ringed planets made of piano keys, and a smiling glass pitcher against a starfield.

In 1989, Thomas Anders tried to step out of Modern Talking’s shadow and become a major solo artist. A move to the US, strong material, polished arrangements—it all seemed right. But it didn’t click. Such a shame; his enormous potential never got the recognition it deserved.

Judging by the first version of the cover for his debut album, it seems Billy Idol wasn’t originally planning to be quite such a “bad boy.” #vinyl
Two versions of Billy Idol’s self-titled debut album cover placed side by side on a bright red textured blanket for comparison. The left cover shows an early design with Idol wearing a loose red, cream, and black patterned shirt, his expression relaxed and his hands resting at his waist. The right cover is the familiar released version, featuring Idol in an open black leather vest with a tattoo visible on his upper arm, staring directly at the camera with a tougher, more confrontational expression. Both covers use the same bold red “IDOL” logo with “BILLY” printed vertically inside the letters, emphasizing the dramatic shift in his public image between the two designs.

The result (and my heart is still broken)
A fresh black-and-grey realistic tattoo of Totoro, a ferret, on the inner forearm, sealed under a glossy aftercare wrap. He’s sitting upright and facing forward, with finely detailed fur shading, an alert expression, and a curled bushy tail. Sunlit sidewalk and a metal railing are visible in the background.

FiiO TT11 — fully automatic turntable, with counterweight, anti-skate and a swappable cartridge, for $175. Spec sheet looks almost too good (W&F ≤0.2%). But how does it hold up in practice — does it really keep true pitch? Worth recommending to beginners? #vinyl
A black wood-grain FiiO TT11 turntable on a dark surface, playing a record with an orange label. An amber glow from the platter’s ambient lighting rims the edge of the disc. My oldest vinyl record is 75 years old. Original press of «Porgy & Bess» by George Gershwin on 3 LP, Columbia Masterworks, 1951, OSL-162
Box set cover for the “Complete” Columbia Masterworks recording of George Gershwin’s *Porgy and Bess*, catalog number OSL-162, recorded in April 1951 and released that same year. The cover art shows two stylized faces in profile rendered in black, yellow, and white woodcut-style illustration, set against scenes of Catfish Row tenement life — figures on green steps, a woman in an apron, men gathered below. A red banner across the top reads “Complete / George Gershwin / PORGY & BESS,” crediting Lawrence Winters, Camilla Williams, Inez Matthews, Warren Coleman, and Avon Long, with Lehman Engel conducting, produced by Goddard Lieberson. The libretto booklet pages (with dialogue and stage directions) fan out from underneath the jacket, resting on a gray surface with a red-striped blanket visible to the right.

Four records are displayed upright along the back: Greatest Hits on Earth by The 5th Dimension, the 12-inch single Cry by Godley & Creme with its distinctive filmstrip-style cover, Men and Women by Simply Red, and Rescue Me by Tom Jones. In the foreground, a vintage Columbia pressing of George Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess is laid flat with its liner notes spread open beneath it.
