The Germans of that time (1095)used Latin descriptions. Later terms popped up in local languages (Kreuzzug, Crusade, etc.) but Latin was way to talk to everybody in Europe for a long time. I think Crusade is a loanword from French croisade. Language changes & cross pollinates anyway.

We have been watching the New Zealand cop show Bust Up on CBC (Gem) & feel that it is worth a recommendation as non-US TV (NZ & ZDF). It has 2 female leads, ex-lovers who find each other again while working at a small community in NZ. One is Maori, has married a man, the other dating a French woman.

I alternate between morning & afternoon. It depends on what tasks I have for the day. I had to cut back on my distance (from 10 K down to 6 every 2nd day) because my ankle is a bit sore if I go the full distance. We will have snow soon & that slows me down too. Reality interferes with running.

We have been watching the first season of MobLand, and despite its overt violence, enjoying it. (The plot description put me off for a season.)The narrative is engaging and a fine example of why I prefer binge watching to weekly episodes that strain both memory and empathy.

Have you seen the UK TV show In The Flesh? (2013). Its about reintegrating ex-zombies into society. I have been thinking about writing something longer about the recent sub-genre of "smart" zombie stories, Warm Bodies, I Zombie, White Trash Zombie, etc. , but I don't know if I have the energy.

While reviewing for a journal I see that something I wrote is cited. This is the 2nd time this has happened in a few months(different topics). Humanities papers have a low citation rate, so I guess I only get to review a narrow spectrum of topics. I am a Fachidiot a. D. with imposter syndrome.

This morning I was looking at some of the proposals for Canada / EU cooperation & started to wonder if that might result in relaxed foreign ownership rules for telecommunication firms. I want to pay EU rates for my mobile phone & that won't happen unless alternate infrastructure can compete.

Our fridge is dying so we have been seeking a new one. Sadly, the space in the kitchen has a cupboard above it that limits the height of the appliance. Apparently short fridges are unavailable in the modern kitchen so this morning I ripped out the (never used) cupboard & we can find a replacement.

I noticed this about 10 years ago, so it is not an AI artifact. Since block formatting is not used in the standard academic paper formats I marked it as an error, but I suppose that it is a change in language that will eventually prevail. However, until it is in the style guides we must protest.

Well I have been reassured...sort of. I asked the Google AI if the recent cautions expressed by AI executives were related to fear of a stock bubble caused by disappointed expectations of AI earnings. The AI reassured me that it was really about the dangers of rogue AIs, not vapourware investments.

I stopped teaching just before AI became popular (pervasive?), but when I was teaching undergraduates I would check to see if the material in the works cited existed and was relevant to the topic, then checked a few citations to be sure that they were accurate.

Today Karin & I received our cheques from a US press. We have been publishing books with them since the early 2000s & today's payments included back payment for "bulk electronic rights." (May include AI lawsuit guilt money.) I'm glad it's still ethical for Canadians to sell things to the US.

About 6 years ago I was trying to learn how to make stop motion video, but my vision deteriorated & I had to quit. Here is a video that I made experimenting with smoking, throwing objects, & eye movement. I called the puppets Uma and the French thug as the faces I sculpted suggested that.

I am finishing my new plex server & discovered the reason for the failure of the old one. I built the new server in my work room, moved it & plugged in the old power & monitor. It would not boot so I spent an hour to discover the monitor had a short that fried the MB. New server is up & running.

My Plex server died last week and I put up a temporary Plex on another system while I am rebuilding the missing server on an old intel mac mini running Linux. It has been a while since I built a new server & I am remembering as the project proceeds. Probably better than Sudoku for memory exercise.

Google Map Names: When I was a student I got on a train from München to Venedig, when I got off the train it was in Venezia and the source city was listed as Monaco di Baviera. My travel handbook was in English (Let's Go Europe) & the city names and features were represented with English names.

I was hanging laundry & received a blow on my head that hurt, looked around and found a big pine cone. I thought it might be a squirrel attack, but then (more rationally)decided to see how far it fell & got an app (NASA's Globe Observer) & spent 40 min to figure out the app & tree height.
