We have been watching the first season of MobLand, and despite its overt violence, enjoying it. (The plot description put me off for a season.)The narrative is engaging and a fine example of why I prefer binge watching to weekly episodes that strain both memory and empathy.

This morning I was looking at some of the proposals for Canada / EU cooperation & started to wonder if that might result in relaxed foreign ownership rules for telecommunication firms. I want to pay EU rates for my mobile phone & that won't happen unless alternate infrastructure can compete.

Our fridge is dying so we have been seeking a new one. Sadly, the space in the kitchen has a cupboard above it that limits the height of the appliance. Apparently short fridges are unavailable in the modern kitchen so this morning I ripped out the (never used) cupboard & we can find a replacement.

Well I have been reassured...sort of. I asked the Google AI if the recent cautions expressed by AI executives were related to fear of a stock bubble caused by disappointed expectations of AI earnings. The AI reassured me that it was really about the dangers of rogue AIs, not vapourware investments.

Today Karin & I received our cheques from a US press. We have been publishing books with them since the early 2000s & today's payments included back payment for "bulk electronic rights." (May include AI lawsuit guilt money.) I'm glad it's still ethical for Canadians to sell things to the US.

About 6 years ago I was trying to learn how to make stop motion video, but my vision deteriorated & I had to quit. Here is a video that I made experimenting with smoking, throwing objects, & eye movement. I called the puppets Uma and the French thug as the faces I sculpted suggested that.

Fun Music Project: I found some copyright free classical music Midi files and I have been changing the instrumentation of Bach BWV 16 from traditional instruments to synthesizers with a DAW (digital audio workstation).

I am finishing my new plex server & discovered the reason for the failure of the old one. I built the new server in my work room, moved it & plugged in the old power & monitor. It would not boot so I spent an hour to discover the monitor had a short that fried the MB. New server is up & running.

My Plex server died last week and I put up a temporary Plex on another system while I am rebuilding the missing server on an old intel mac mini running Linux. It has been a while since I built a new server & I am remembering as the project proceeds. Probably better than Sudoku for memory exercise.

Google Map Names: When I was a student I got on a train from München to Venedig, when I got off the train it was in Venezia and the source city was listed as Monaco di Baviera. My travel handbook was in English (Let's Go Europe) & the city names and features were represented with English names.

I was hanging laundry & received a blow on my head that hurt, looked around and found a big pine cone. I thought it might be a squirrel attack, but then (more rationally)decided to see how far it fell & got an app (NASA's Globe Observer) & spent 40 min to figure out the app & tree height.

Last night I tried a language experiment. I started watching a Belgian TV show (Netflix) with Dutch subs instead of English. It's a firefighter drama with more action than dialogue so I got about 60% comprehension. I never studied Dutch, but with German, English & French the subs were OK.

We were watching a Japanese TV show & Karin asked what kind of "European" car the detective was driving. It was a Morris Mini. I had one when I was in my 20s. Back then I was avoiding buying US vehicles because of Vietnam. (2 Triumphs, a Norton, & a Fiat) Now I just avoid US groceries.

We watched the horror/comedy film Cold Storage on Prime. It has a nice balance of the two genres as well as a clear narrative structure with no Marvelesque excursions into city destruction or car chases. Think Andromeda Strain with humour & working class heroes. www.imdb.com/title/tt8879...

We started watching the Hulu show Furious last night and I am still disturbed by the creative obsession with sexual violence pervasive in contemporary TV & film. The narrative, acting & cinematography are good, but "homo homini lupus" is not the way I would like to see the world.

Crows that come to eat on our deck often pick up morsels of food and feed it to another adult bird. I looked it up and apparently this is either courting behaviour or altruistic feeding of weak or injured birds. I fear that the US will accuse us of spreading the Canadian welfare state to animals.

The house ac stopped blowing cool air again so we turned it off & called repair. The Guy said it had to be malfunctioning to diagnose so he topped up coolant and left it in permanent on mode. We are now to call when it fails again. Karin is not happy.

Got an error message on my Rav4 yesterday and was worried, so I checked to see if this was common. It is and most agree that it is usually not as serious as the message indicates. (Like referred pain in a tooth?) I rebooted the warning system with temporary disconnect of battery. Message gone now.

Yesterday was my birthday so today I went to Costco to buy an Apple TV as my present. (Karin & I usually pick our own larger presents). Monday the Apple TV was ~200 CDN, but today it was ~350 CDN. I should have bought it last week.
