249. Nocturnal Animals (Amazon, 2016 - Tom Ford) I underestimated this on release, found it alienating. And it is very cold. But it's also troubling, complex, clever, beautifully shot + acted. The cast is remarkable, it's full of slippery foreshadowing and doubling and subtle cross-references 1/2

Planning ahead for Friday. Gutted to miss out on tickets for Fatherland...

248. Ninjababy (mubi, 2021 - Yngvild Sve Flikke) this was great - frank, real, very very funny. The animated nods to its graphic novel origins manage not to be annoying, lead Kristine Kujath Thorp (Sick Of Myself) is excellent again and the whole thing is just really in yr face and enjoyable.

247. Antoine et Colette (Criterion, 1962 - François Truffaut) Antoine from Quatre Cents Coups is back, and he's in love. Brief, sweet first love story with some typical Truffaut flourishes.

246. The President's Cake (mubi, 2025 - Hasan Hadi) I suppose the 'innocent child surviving in oppressive circumstances' is a well-worn trope but this is a lovely movie, naturalistic and charming but with a bleak setting.

245. Free Party (Amazon, 2023 - Aaron Trinder) Nostalgic, euphoric, kinda tragic. I was at a few of the pivotal moments featured - Stonehenge (sort of), Treworgey, Glastonbury travellers field 1990, The Dolehouse, The Roundhouse etc. I saw a few people I knew, more I recognised. 1/2

Had a nap. For maybe the third time I dreamed I was one of the kids in Never Let Me Go and my time was nearly up. Woke up fully traumatised. Genuinely wish I'd never read / seen Never Let Me Go.

It's a shame to miss a Sandra Huller performance but you're more likely to find me eating kimchi than watching Iñárritu directing Cruise.

244. Race With The Devil (Criterion, 1975 - Jack Starrett) Oates! Fonda! Swit! Texan Satanists on wheels... ... But it's really not as scary and exciting as teenage me found it

Stagger Lee @staggerlee68.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

243. Resident Evil (Tyneside, 2026 - Zach Cregger) Don't go + see this expecting subtext. This is gleefully inventive and nasty Big Dumb Monster Fun. Austin Abrams gives good every-slacker, it's brisk and efficient and just funny enough. Can't relate it to games or the other films but I had a blast

000

Stagger Lee @staggerlee68.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

242. Hope (Tyneside, 2026 - Na Hong-Jin) Like a Jive Bunny megamix of every creature feature / alien movie you've ever seen, presented in a batshit full-on assault with the briefest of pauses for breath midway. It's probably too long, it's definitely full of holes... 1/2

241. Pulp: What Do You Do For An Encore (mubi, 2026 - Garth Jennings) I was a big Pulp fan - I was deep in the crowd for 'that' Glastonbury show and I saw them loads. But somewhere along the road I let my Cult Of Jarvis membership lapse and when they reformed I was unsurprised and unmoved. 1/2

240. The Dirty Dozen (HBO, 1967 - Robert Aldrich) Here they are, all the tough guys, tough guying around, all laconic and surly. The first 3/4s of the movie are brilliant, it's just a treat watching Cassavetes squaring off to Lee Marvin, Lee Marvin facing up to Ernest Borgnine and so on. 1/2

Saint Etienne started releasing records as I moved to North London. Those frazzled Camden comedown days always had Saint Etienne playing somewhere. And they've been there for 35 more years, reliably wonderful. Judging by how moved I was tonight, they meant more to me than I ever realised. 1/2

238. The Beguiled (torrent, 2017 - Sofia Coppola) Coppola is so good at this stuff. Claustrophobic, fevered, hazy female energy. The cast are almost all great (Kidman's accent isn't) and it all looks wonderful (when there's enough light: it's a gloomy movie). Much better than the Eastwood version
