PSA: A reminder that the best way to pick apples & pears is as easy as 1-2-3: 1. Cup the fruit in the palm of your hand 2. Lift the fruit gently towards horizontal 3. Detach the ripe fruit, or return it to position if it’s not ready 👍🍎👍 orchardnotes.com/2020/09/03/h... #apples #pears #harvesting

I know babies aren’t for me because a 3 month old kitten was too much for me. Then nearly 20 years later I tried a 6 month old puppy and that was too much for me. I survived both experiences but just barely.

I didn’t set out to collect this many apple-related books over the past month, but I can’t say I’m mad about it. 🍏📚
A stack of 8 books related to apples. Titles include Cider Hard and Sweet, The Artist and the Orchard: A Memoir, Good Apples, Modern Fruit Production (published 1947), Tasting Cider, Overheard in the Orchard, Ciderhouse Cookbook, and Apples and the Art of Detection

I’m wondering if this netted pattern is caused by an environmental factor, a predictable varietal trait, or perhaps something else entirely? Any which way, I think it’s exquisitely beautiful!

Coddling moth is ubiquitous where I’m located in the U.S. Next year I’ll try spraying with Kaolin clay powder (organic). Is it not available in the UK, or do you not find it effective? (I’m a fairly new and amateur grower.)

Absolutely flawless evening with a cider flight, an open mic night, and a book on commercial fruit production in the U.S. published in 1941🍻🍎🍐
A beautiful cider tasting room strewn with dozens of vining plants, a flight of cider and a vintage book called Modern Fruit Production on the table in the foreground, and an acoustic trio playing and singing in the background

“What a beautiful universe, hon" says a telescope as gazes upon an aurora borealis. “It really is”, responds the telescope's partner, who it turns out is not a telescope, but a microscope. Hands full of algae, she wades waist deep in a disgusting swamp, amazed by the heavenly microscopic life all around them.

“Serendipity overwhelming intention. A mild interest burgeoning into what some may describe as obsession. Tickling the surface has created an itch that must be scratched, a compulsion that must be sated. Many orchardists and makers have been caught up and swept along on similar currents.”

Yes! The teacher of the workshop grafted that one for me since I was having enough trouble getting the hang of the cuts on the practice wood. 😆 But I have one little scion left from the highway tree, and I’m going to try the Z graft you recommended!

With some generous help from a pro, the mysterious highway apples have been grafted! Cross your fingers for me, because we weren’t able to get much scion wood off it. (I also tried my own hand at grafting a Hudson’s Golden Gem!)

By no means a new article, but a great read nonetheless. A thoughtful dive into questions about the role of nature vs. human intervention in cider/wine production, and why “nature vs. human intervention” is itself an unhelpful false dichotomy.

I keep thinking “my god the people they’ve killed seem like exceptionally good folks” and I think the lesson there is that they’re not exceptional, but that wonderful people abound and that a baseline distrust in humanity is a shitty conservative trope that privileges power over collective strength
