Knowing this it's almost unbelievable he won't support Ukraine. Last when I saw a chart about it over 80% of all voters support Ukraine and it's above 60% among the Republicans as well. It would be the easiest way to get more people to vote for the GOP in the coming election. Totally mind boggling.

Don't worry, you're not the only one. Ukraine does that sort of thing when one goes away. It has happened to me too :(.

This sounds to me like market manipulation to push the oil prices temporarily down. It may work (as in the oil price comes down), but I doubt the actual transaction will happen for exactly the reasons you just listed.

So who took the hit on these write offs? The Ministry of Finance, banks, or someone else?

The transportation costs must be killing any benefit, especially considering that that grain is mostly heading towards African ports.

Sigh, I'm at the loss of words with this man. I hate few things more than the renaming of things. I'm so old fashioned, I still like to talk about "global warming" rather than "climate change" or "climate crisis".

I would really like to know how many of their wells have frozen and will freeze this winter and hence become locked until Western companies return (which won't happen anytime soon).

Wasn't he supposed to rename the Strait of Hormuz to the Strait of Trump? I'm in general strongly opposed to all renaming business, even when the reason is rather obvious, such as renaming "Nigger Hills" to "Kānuka Hills" in New Zealand, or "Nigger Island" to "Seppänen" in Finland.

I do wonder how long it will take for the first world leader to actually use the words "you in danger girl" when they are warning another world leader for an impending potential disaster.

Yes, she'll probably win the first round, but typically in French everyone piles against Le Pen in the second round. In other words, Le Pen has a high voter floor and a low voter sealing. To win an election you need a high sealing.

It sort of reminds me of the pictures of Barak Obama before and after his presidency. Before he looked super youthful, after he looked like an old man and that was just in 8 years. What Putin is doing is far more stressful than being the US president, he's running a dictatorship in war after all.

I hate this event with a passion. A lot of amateur observers keep using it as a claim and say "see, Russia is an open society". It must be pointed (again) that all the questions are pre-vetted and don't allow Putin himself to ever be criticized. At best there is a veneer criticism of Putin-related.

The only issue is that in Switzerland visas are not issued by the Swiss government, but by the cantons (think of them as US states) and there's 26 of them, so even if one (or 25) refuse to issue a visa for Russians, there's still at least one canton left that could do so.

To be fair, almost no countries have sex-offender registries, it's largely an Anglo thing. Although, one would suspect that there are crime registries in Russia (as in all countries) that keep a tally on each convicted crime a person has ever committed. If the latter doesn't exist, I'd be surprised.

I loved the amounts WildBerries itself compensated the entrepreneurs for their losses. It was something like 2% of the loss amount, so every $100k lost resulted in a $2k compensation. And funnily enough, I suspect that the Russian government can't or won't compensate them even by that much :).

...that the reality is far worse? And that these stats really don't matter, because in PPP adjusted GDP Russia is still doing absolutely fantastically, especially when the comparison uses Russian official statistical data.

I can't believe that I now think that Laura Loomer is awesome. I viewed her as perhaps the dumbest, most deluded Russia trolls out there, and she's been making a lot of sense for the past few weeks. My world view will be torched by the time this war ends if things continue like this.

My favorite character, Stinky, has become extremely difficult to find in the US unfortunately. He's a dishonest, mischievous, and opportunistic character with dark brown fur, a large nose, and he emits a horrible odor. He's all over the place in Finland (as Haisuli), but not on your Moomin rack.

It's been known for a while now that both China and Russia have de facto banned abortions, vasectomies and are restricting birth control other ways as well. There are also stories of things being in the works to mandate child bearing for women. Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen

Twitter is still my favorite social media. I just wish that all the stuff I see on BlueSky, Threads etc. would be on Twitter, so that I wouldn't need to use multiple apps that do exactly the same thing. Oh, and I also hate all the Russian trolls on Twitter - governments don't have freedom of speech!

They could also attempt to use the ships to move the cargo through their river network into the Caspian Sea. The problem is that then that grain would basically end up in Iran, or at best maybe go through trucks from Azerbaijan to Georgia and Turkey. The grain is most likely headed to Africa.

I don't get why people are obsessed about the wealth of Musk or anyone else. It's statistically better the be the poorest person in one's social circle, because then there are much more opportunities for rapid advancement.

According to basic actuarial tables from the US the chance of a 79 year old man making it to 84 has a 55% baseline, which is less than your 62%. Speculating about Trump's health or lifespan is about as productive as declaring "Putin is done". Yes, eventually he will be, but speculation is pointless.

"Jury of his peers" doesn't mean the jury will consists of black men the same age, it means it consists of "fellow citizens" living in the same community. The idea is to select them at random and then eliminate half of those selected to maximize the chance of impartiality.

stabu.bsky.social @stabu.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
It's called "citizen's arrest right" and it is allowed (including the chase) if a suspected crime is seen in front of the citizen's eyes. I know this because I just did a citizen's arrest on a black man stealing an alcohol bottle. The police officers came (one of them was black) & thanked me for it.

stabu.bsky.social @stabu.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
The way jury selection works is that there's first 24 people (usually double how many are accepted) as jurors and then the plaintiff and defense each get to pick out the ones they don't want in the jury. So if the plaintiff removes all the black (or white) jurors that they can it's their right.

A funny note: most languages have a government supported academic body that regulates said language. English is one of the few languages that doesn't. And unsurprisingly, these academic bodies that regulate languages are typically worse than useless.
