I love hockey, but "lots of the other people who love hockey also love the Nazi bar" is the least surprising thing ever

Yup, the *realistic* best case scenario for any hockey player's views about current events is "why would I have any views about current events?"

came here to say this. i am fairly sure that if i knew what mikhail sergachev or lawson crouse thought about current events it would make me deeply unhappy

At least in the US context this makes sense to me. The typical right-wing position is that everyone is corrupt and they are just evening the score for "their people," whereas the typical left-wing position here is that corruption is bad

Last week, I was in a small meeting with a powerful person in my field. He was *ridiculously* strong at his job until ~2019. The meeting helped me understand what happened: he got enough power that people stopped being honest with him, and he never realized it

And even when you get the "good" dictator the best you're going to get is basically Mark Cuban; i.e., someone who does seem to want good things for other people but is so detached from day-to-day reality on account of being Mark Cuban that that every 5th policy would be insane.

It is possible (if not probable) that you could find a benevolent dictator. It's even conceivable to imagine that person being replaced by another benevolent dictator. But eventually the odds will catch up to you, and you only need to catch the bad type of dictator once.

i have too many scars to think this will hold despite all evidence that our offense appears to be good

I think we might be good, actually. No one is more surprised by this than we are.

anything is possible, but worth remembering that a non-trivial portion of residents are there bc utah is too woke

there's a real split between people who actually want Abdul to win and people who want him to lose so they can smugly blame the libs for it

huh, i've always thought of Kansas as the least bad target in the region both bc of education (most educated GOP state other than Utah) and bc the last Dem sen/gov in Missouri was elected in '12, Iowa '08, and Nebraska '06

in no way excusing the deception, but the real statement is at best weak sauce. i really wish there were more folks in the ossoff quadrant of "center left / extremely into punching trump"

yeah my immediate reaction was "man that's deceptively clipped, and also the real statement is terrible"

Without buying into the day's melodrama this is the one that I think needs more serious regulatory guardrails. Democratizing the ability to develop viruses or bacteria is bad, actually!

My most selfish trait is that I'm enjoying this brief period of time (maybe I've got another 3 months?) where 10% of my profession thinks LLMs are magic and 89% thinks they're useless or worse. It's an insane if short-lived competitive advantage to see them as very useful tools

Lawyer here. Had an LLM do a final pre-filing check for typos this afternoon. Brief was extremely clean, the thing just found a few nits no one would care about. With one exception. Somehow there was a signigicant typo in the first paragraph that half a dozen of us had missed.

100% right big picture. But on the specifics if I even look at something sweet within an hour of drinking alcohol I hurt for days 🫠

I'll own up to expensive taste in wine. Do not recommend. It's not that I can tell a super expensive bottle from a merely expensive one, it's that the styles I like tend to start around $35-40/bottle 😔

to build on your last clause, the public view of data centers might be different if they were using cleaner power and paying the same taxes as other businesses

That you are claiming Chat GPT gave you good legal advice when instead it told you to confess to a crime, which is not what a human lawyer would consider good legal advice.

The guy literally said that he thought it was good advice!! Like a part of me wants to send him the STFU Friday video but a much more evil part of me just wants to tell him vaya con dios

I use it quite a bit for work now and think it's almost as much of a mistake in my field to never use it as it is to use it incorrectly or pathologically 🤷‍♂️

Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Huh. Now I'm wondering how many people are going to confess to crimes because of ChatGPT.

My apparently niche take is that good candidates win and bad ones lose and very little of that has to do with policy positions. (Applied here I’m optimistic in MI and skeptical in WI.)

Of course he’s a Mercedes guy. No chance he has a vehicle where you can actually feel the road.

Huh I have to admit I’m too tired to look it up right now but I could swear we had some of the worst traffic stats in the country
000
Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I have caught myself unironically saying that Utah drivers aren’t bad, just fast, as if the obligation to go a minimum of 80 on the highway (at least if you don’t want to get rear-ended) isn’t the reason for all the traffic fatalities

Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Oh yeah, not disputing your premise *at all*; trying to solve the problem of the difference between Montana and Illinois by standing for nothing obviously doesn't work
000
Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
There's a huge Schumer/Jeffries/etc problem everywhere and the mountain west is part of "everywhere." But also if you look at who just won Utah's deep blue congressional primary, it is someone miles to the right of the candidates to win similarly blue districts elsewhere
000
Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
There's a bit of both/and going on here I think. Because one issue is that what can get 51% of people to vote Not Republican in Idaho and Montana (and I am guessing but do not really know Nebraska) just isn't the same as it is in states that are blue on the presidential level

we wouldn't let a brain surgeon replace your hip, assuming areas of law are fungible is not as much better as people imagine and yet that's our system

Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
You're right, and it causes my brain to go off on a tangent: NH has got to be up there with UT in terms of the largest divergence between popularity of Trump and the state GOP, right?

I wonder if there is some difference between Quigley and (((Schakowsky))) that might explain this

The thing that tipped me off was "move to new state and run for seat in a district where you are too cool to live"

oh no

Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Maybe your answer is implicitly the answer to my question, which is that sites conflate "friction" with "cost," and don't think to reduce the first rather than the second.
000
Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Yeah, I think the big picture point is that AFAIK this is not like the types of industries where you get to a point where you won't switch even for a step change in quality or price
020
Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
For sure, my answer was glib in part because the reason switching is easy for me is that I have a closed front-end tool that gives me various models from a drop-down. Getting your model *in* the drop down is not zero cost

Stabby Duck @stabbyduck613.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Yeah, I can't figure out why incumbency is an advantage. It's only a slight exaggeration to say that If someone released an LLM that was better than Claude it would take me no seconds to switch all of my LLM use to that new product
