Super important to teach children, young and old, about consent. My God, we still need to say that in the year of our Lord 2026.

Fall family weekend is amazing. Also a perfect time for parents to remind their kids that college is NOT a permission to commit crimes.

Really really appalling news of sexual assault against young women on campuses, of young men having the audacity to commit crimes, of universities failing to protect and ensure a just process. We’re really doing something so wrong as a society.

Where to start? First the literary range lol. Didn’t realize John Green wrote The Fault in Our Stars. Read that many yrs ago in Montreal, same time my cousin was reading a French copy. He’s now into med history, which I think he’s done well. Second, what a harrowing situation it is in Sierra Leone!

Two summers ago, I became quite picky with food. Went cold turkey on red meat & caffeine & low sugar. First one has stuck with some consequences. Caffeine was back by fall. Low sugar flip-flops. Sometimes, eating uncrustables is a win. So yep, I know all the reservations, but I love uncrustables.

Okay, @barackobama.bsky.social’s post about Sunny’s passing is beautiful but also painful, and everyone who’s ever loved a dog in their life gets it.

Some of you should do penance for the sole reason of kicking the pew kneelers every Sunday. I’m dead serious why would you do that? Jk NOT serious.

When I was still on the other platform, what I used to do on this day every year was to retweet, “Hey, Jules. It’s Brian.” Hearing the audio of this call at the museum broke my heart. Thinking about all the lives lost and the families they’ve left behind.

Kids with 1520 SAT scores are also kids who refuse to wear helmets while blitzing around on electronic scooters and mopeds. So tell me, where have we all gone wrong?

Was a dorm girl. All first year student dorm then moved to an all girls dorm for upper class. My dorm rooms in the mid to late 2000s were too modest, all on campus. Lucky to have grown up and done college as social media platforms were just starting. Had kind roommates too!

Learned that many are now getting into mahjong? Great! Pls do it with your grandparents! It helps with cognitive health. My childhood was mostly playing with neighbors as my grandma was having mahjong sessions with 3 of her friends. Inevitably, I was raised to be a mahjongera & always will be lol

Reading this book on the history of salt, and the author was talking about an expedition in Burma. Got distracted. I was reminded of that tamarind leaf curry I had at a vegan restaurant in Old Bagan. That was so good.

Someone spoke after mass at church today. Guy converted in 2024 when he was 20 and chose his godparents. Thought that was cool. Wonder whom I would have chosen if it were me. Mom chose good godparents though. Mostly her childhood friends who saw me growing up, still her friends today.

I wrote two vignettes for my students to analyze, one was about Five Days at Memorial. My students were tasked to hypothetically ration limited healthcare resources - this generated a lot of debate. We discussed Hurricane Katrina & its impact on healthcare. This below was just a random trivia lol

I’ve developed this habit of sprinkling US trivia loosely connected to class lessons like today the question was which two states don’t use the term “county”? Lol they guessed this rather quickly. Them: TX! Me: close. Them: OK! Me: close. Them: AZ! Me: don’t move west! Them: so north? Someone: LA!

One of my best reads this summer is The Many Lives of Mama Love. She asked that tough question that I would assume people like her, those addicted to substances, often grapple with as well. Why does the deep, unconditional love for their children become secondary to the next high?

Someday I’m gonna look back on my teaching career and laugh because, of all that we discussed that one summer day, what my students remembered was my random question asking them which university was founded by Thomas Jefferson.

It was art from someone very trained & educated but never boastful, always for the masses. You know the embodiment of what we always say in our university? “Lagi’t lagi para sa bayan.” It was & still is art that is relevant for its fierce commentary on our social, political & cultural struggle.

July five yrs ago was when social realist Neil Doloricon died. He served as Dean of the UP College of Fine Arts. We worked on a huge project for the university yrs before & he remembered. Saw a gallery selling his linocut relief prints to support other artists during the pandemic, so I reached out.

I’m gonna hold your hand when I say this: the social systems are problematic and probably always will, but good people can exist within them. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. Hope your summer’s been well.

I’m talking about public figures, btw. People with influence who could shape our respective communities & our society. I refrain from crucifying generally good politicians for a disagreement on one policy. I won’t castigate an artist for being a billionaire because of the art that they have made….

And my older self would never be interested in subjecting him to one. He was imperfect. He made choices I would never agree with. I could recognize his mistakes AND acknowledge all the good he did later. Those truths don’t cancel each other out. They coexist.

You know what has gotten us into this mess? The purity test. We stopped entertaining the possibility that two things could be true at the same time. Now we’re expected to agree on everything, or everything falls apart. One disagreement becomes a deal breaker. I learned this the hard way.

Who’s gonna write one for swimming? Could be Rowdy Gaines, Mel Stewart, Kyle Sockwell or me lol. Made me think of moments that made me say “God I fucking love swimming!!!” Like Ledecky in Kazan ALL OF IT. DiRado in Rio for the 200 back. That fr relay in Beijing we still couldn’t stop talking about.

You know the world is fucked when we have people complaining that donations are made to pediatric medicine, animal welfare, food security, music and sports education, programs for first responders and their families and not to other equally important causes. This is why we can’t have nice things.
010
Louise @sstrohem.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Just my take: instead of attacking donors and making things all about them, it’s wiser & more pragmatic to see donations from the perspective of its recipients. For example, a generous donation to MSK Kids is a lifeline for every child with cancer and their family.

Almost the end of glorious June, the birth month of the bestest people lol. Finished this today. Took a while cause I had to take down notes. Also prioritized five non-academic books in between lol. I know it looks worn precisely because it has been read, stapled, annotated & filled with marginalia.
