One of the big complaints you see from grognards is how the 'kids these days' have turned D&D into some joke and 'something-something-theater-kids' unlike the 'good old days' when it was all serious hardcore grimdark as Saint Gary intended. Meanwhile, Gary was dropping random comics in the rulebooks

Most of those were remnants of old edition spell components that no one bothered to change. It's still a lot more subtle than posting a literal joke comic in the middle of the rules.

The 1e AD&D books were loaded with comics. I'm unsure if a "serious" RPG could get away with that today. Paranoia, sure. It's a silly RPG. But I bet if a new D&D came out tomorrow with joke comics sprinkled throughout, people would outrage at it sending the "wrong message" and not being serious.

Last night, during a bout of insomnia, I re-read the Knight Moves portion of Act 1 just to figure out how all the moving pieces will work together. Judging my our current play schedule the soonest I can get to this campaign is 2 years, but reading it is such a great kick.

Looking through reviews of an adventure I'm considering running. Not many out there except one from the late Bud Baird. So it's kinda weird and sad hearing my old friend's voice, but also cool knowing that while he might be gone, Bud has still got my back and offering help.

Secrets of the Ancients is an amazing campaign. And if you haven't checked out my monster 10-part review & campaign diary for it, you definitely should. It offers tips, tricks, new resourses, and the unhinged madness of how my players handled it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nriu...

Oh it reads great with the PCs running around in 1920s space suits made out of brass diving suits, and going through the Stargate, watching the universe die and be reborn, and all that stuff. But playing it... not as impressive.

Theres an old Call of Cthulhu adventure (Bad Moon Rising) modeled after Forbidden Planet (at least the ancient alien facility with enormous machinery). Adventure was meh, but rewatching Forbidden Planet for my game prep and playing the soundtrack during the session was pretty awesome

Finished The Library At Mount Char. Really enjoyed it. I nearly gave up near the halfway mark because there wasn't much in the way of characters or understandable plot, apart from, "Oooh, isn't this so terribly mysterious?" which is a pet turnoff of mine. Then it coalesced into a great story.

Advancements in technology meant the office Computer Room of the 1980s was no longer necessary. But at what cost?
Airflow Company advertisement from the 1980s showing a trio of abnormally attractive people in swimsuits working in an office Computer Room, flanked by giant reel-to-reel machines.
Debbie sits before a console with perfect posture. She wears the blue and white-striped 1-piece that Craig likes. The deep v-neck shows her ample cleavage, but Craig isn't looking.
Craig stands in the background talking to that bitch Stephanie, who wears a red one-piece. Her blonde hair cascades to her shoulders, shining in the florescent lights. She and Craig read a Dennis The Menace comic from a newspaper, but Craig keeps sneaking peeks down the front of Stephanie's swimsuit. Stephanie pretends she doesn't notice, but leans close to give him a better look.
Debbie grits her teeth in silent anger, only the sharp click-clacking of her keyboard keys reveal her boiling rage. How dare Stephanie make a move on Craig! She knew Debbie liked him. She always does this. First Mark, then Ken, and now Craig! She must be stopped. That bitch needs to pay!
Debbie releases a slow breath as she continues typing the Thelman Report. She appears calm. Passive. But deep in her mind she plots revenge.

Thing is, I don't know of any specific review I've called an adventure straightforward. But it's a term I know I've used. It's far better for an intro adventure than "complicated"

There has to be some lost-in-translation detail I'm not understanding with your argument. I don't see the issue with calling any adventure "straightforward." It's not a catchphrase. It's not an insult. Is there some specific corebook adventure review you have a beef with or is this all hypothetical?

A chaos of a blind idiot mind's dreams (hallucinations) is the only way to describe it. The datacenter temples are being erected. Nyarlathotep wears the face of tech bros as it opens the gate to our oblivion.

Judging by the increasing number of AI RPGs, it's only a matter of time before some AI YouTube channel pops up that reviews AI RPGs to an audience of AI chatbots. Just a swirling chaos of inhuman minds like dreaming Azathoth, its slumber serenaded by AI melodies. There might already be one.

You'll never get all. I think they're more effective now than a decade ago, mostly because it's common for a publisher to have some free adventures. The big remaining hurdle I've found is some publishers almost hide them on their website instead of huge unmissable links going, "FREE ADVENTURE HERE!"

Seth Skorkowsky @sskorkowsky.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Yeah, I'm not sure why calling an adventure straightforward is an issue. For introductory adventures I find it better than over-complicated. For example, my review of CoC's Crimson Letters is it's not new-Keeper friendly. Love the adventure, but don't think it's a good one for the core rulebook.
