Twenty-five-year-old Ash has just been released from a psychiatric hold following a suicide attempt, and her life is in shambles. Spiraling and overwhelmed, witchy, neopagan Ash tries to put a curse into the universe, so that anyone who tries to fuck with her will hurt like she hurts. Later, in a moment of clarity and horror, she recants the curse. It's fine. Curses aren't real anyway, right?
Then a man who stands her up for a date is murdered. It's all over the news. Surely it can't be the curse she recanted? At first, she's able to shake off an impending emotional spiral with the help of her therapy group friend Leticia and witchy crush Dara. However, strange things continue to happen. Her window is broken by an unknown stranger. Her ex-best friend's apartment is broken into. When Ash's skeazy professor is murdered right in front of her, she must accept the facts—someone is stalking her and the people who have wronged her. A Not-Ash who looks exactly like Ash.
It's only a matter of time before Not-Ash is found out, so real Ash turns to her new friends for help. To save everyone from the doppelganger, they'll have to work together to figure out what it is and how to slay it. But killing it might mean, for Ash, facing her darkest inner demons. If she doesn't, then Not-Ash will kill everyone who has hurt her--including the people she cares about.

PITCH: Eighteen-year-old Laurie Loveday is having a rough night—apparently, she’s a witch, vampires are real, and they’re in Jinxborough. Oh, and their bites freakin’ hurt. Trying to connect with locals doesn’t mean having someone’s teeth at her neck. Unable to sass her way out of the predicament, she breaks free with her latent magic but is pushed to the ground. Right before she becomes human à la mode, Vincent, her coworker from the bookstore, appears and kills the attacker.

Vincent Fraley hates being a newbie vampire, but he’s grateful his sharp instincts saved Laurie. The transition from rebellious mortal to upstanding bloodsucker has been difficult. What’s more challenging is hiding the murder—and shielding Laurie from his obtrusive, anti-witch mother. Falling for his natural enemy is a big blunder, but Laurie makes Vincent feel human again.

They can’t get too distracted by their mutual attraction, since the slain foe’s family, House Greaves, will seek vengeance if the murder comes to light. The Blue Blood Series by Melissa de la Cruz Is used to represent the wealthy elite vampires living in New York, the fish out of water trope, dark secrets, and others.

The Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice is used to represent young vampires rebelling against old rules and customs. Travel and setting also play a role. A plot point was inspired by the novel.

Yakuza, Japan’s Criminal Underworld by David Kaplan and Alec Dubro, is used to represent some of the vampire rivals business practices. It plays a role in the series arch.

My previous book which was the first novel I ever wrote died in query trenches. I knew in my heart the manuscript had problems. So I shelved it and moved on to the next one. Rewriting it was too much effort at the time.
