The Alawite rebels attacked the government on Wednesday, and killed about 200, but were beaten after that. The government killed a lot of rebels, and possibly civilians as well. So no good guys, but this is exactly Russia's M.O. to grab territory. They want the Alawites to set up a new state.

None of these guys are very good, but hopefully the new guy will be ok. Russia has both a naval and air base on the coast, and they have been delaying leaving. Assad was an Alawite, and the Alawites live on the coast, so if Putin can set up a break away area, he can keep his bases. Same as Crimea
