My advisor moved to Australia in my last year of my degree! Pre-Zoom/skype/etc, so that was ... fun.

“Excel data fail”. That was a typo, but I’m also not wrong. I’ve certainly had some data fails.

It JUST came out in July, but Rebecca Thorne wrote Moss-ed In Space, which features a ship run by an organic computer that is composed of a moss colony. The computer is named, logically, Moss.

Back from #ESA2026 and ... missing #Botany2026. I couldn't go to both and I am sad about it.

Day 1 of #ESA2026 included finding a queer bookstore, talking science, and a dinosaur. Rawr. On to day 2!

Getting ready for #ESA2026 aka an entire week of nerdy science and nerdy people. I will, as always, report on the tea situation in the exhibit hall as well as any bookstores I happen to find.

I am always having so much fun with scale drawings. These images are usually depicted quite small on a page in books, there just to show the size of the animal. I love adding some extra details and funny situations to these. :) Here is a series I have just made for an upcoming book. #SciArt

I've heard "but you don't SOUND like your folks live in Texas" more times than I can count. Yes. You are correct. That is intentional. (Except if I am visiting them, and then I do sound like I'm from Texas, just like I sound like I'm from Georgia when visiting those folks.)

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon. Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

Oh, the Salisbury and Ross stans will be here shortly to argue with you about this even though S&R hasn’t been updated since the early 90s. (Team T&Z all the way)

Thank you! I've been putting off my LJ import for years for no good reason but just started it (also paid for some time on DW since this has to be a load on your servers).

Overheard at #ESA2025: “oh, I love that species. They’re *so* cute.” Were they talking about animals? Plants? Insects? Fungi? At ESA, it’s all of the above.

Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends: 1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration; 2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you; 3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

I'm starting to make my schedule for #ESA2025 and ... can anyone tell me how to select individual talks in a session? I can only select the whole session, so far as I can tell. What button did I miss?

I was hoping for the yearly confluence of the Ecological Society of America conference and the European Speedrunner Assembly in the convention hashtag and the Speedrunners already had their convention! Aww, no interleaving of discussions of Borderlands and border lands. #ESA2025

So, keeping in mind that I saw this listing several months ago and took the screenshots because no one would ever believe me otherwise when I told them about this, I think it was just two bedrooms up in that area. I could not begin to find the listing now to confirm that, though.

I regret to inform you that it was not.
In the foreground is a toilet and sink with no walls around them or in front of them. In the background is a door into a bedroom.

I found this picture in a listing not long ago. It was described, apparently unironically, as a "convenient half bath". I sincerely doubt it was permitted.
A toilet and a sink are installed at the top of an open staircase. There are half-walls on either side of them. No door. No walls. Just a toilet and a sink out in the middle of everywhere.

Let’s just say I don’t have any Elves as role models, but I do have Aragorn, Faramir, Éowyn, Théoden and Frodo as characters who I’d like to be like in real life. There’s a certain kind of wisdom to be gained from our experience of mortality that the Elves can’t. #tolkien #luinellë

The best thing about working from home: taking a quick lunch nap with the cats. The worst thing about working from home: having to get out of the nice warm bed and go back to work while the cats stay where they were.
