It's why I think movies like Eddington will be well-remembered, even if consensus on that film isn't super positive atm. That kind of willingness to engage with the gross quotidian realities of modern life (especially WRT Social Media) is pretty uncommon.

So now we're getting a post-Covid sans AI world in all da new media. I wonder if artists were "i pretend I do not see it"-ing aspects of, say, '70s life as it happened. Obviously a lot of political stuff but you can't say that's as ubiquitous & everyday as Covid & AI were + are.

With cases like this, I imagine it's an attempt to preserve some semblance of the Japanese syntax but I don't understand why that should even be a consideration 99% of the time. It definitely shouldn't be here. Death to the obsession with ~fidelity~ in manga translation

Also just remembered this great, unfortunately true Bolaño quote about Márquez

They kind of suck but I love them. In any case, mapping human standards of morality onto the way animals treat each other will always be lame

Interesting that that one copypasta about sloths is used so benignly in comparison

and again, "saying so many words for vanishingly little semantic meaning" SOUNDS like something a bad writer does, but like, no they don't. bad writers waste time defining words and giving unnecessary backstory, which is different

Entirely possible that wasn't Lefty's (lol) intention but it definitely reads that way to me. Awful, clunky songwriting either way tho

Can't get over how odd a sequence of alcoholic beverages that is. Obviously all for the sake of the rhyme but in what context is someone having a glass of wine, then neat gin, and then a shot of tequila??

i do not care even a little abt whether people have experienced enough pain to legitimize their art, i care about the voice of the author and automating portions of the process means that voice is compromised

"Angel's Eye" also v good. I like "Dancing in the Club" but Lenderman's rendition is simply better

Yea haven't seen him make that particular point but it does sound like something he would say unfortunately lol. (Also just noticed I said "write" instead of "right." I shouldn't use my phone at 3am)

He has a book called The Reading Gaze which I thought was pretty good. Some of his thinking is a little crank-y but I think he was write about most things. I certainly sided with him in his discursions with Eddie Campbell

Understandably Park Chan-Wook directs with such verve that he's hard to follow up but I found myself disappointed with the lack of personality behind the camera past the first three episodes. Meirelles & Munden try emulate Park's stylings a bit, but without much conviction or style of their own

I watched Park Chan-Wook's miniseries The Sympathizer. Then I watched Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden's The Sympathizer, which I enjoyed less. Thought it was pretty good overall, though, especially at the points it felt least like an NYT bestseller. Would recommend
