and again, "saying so many words for vanishingly little semantic meaning" SOUNDS like something a bad writer does, but like, no they don't. bad writers waste time defining words and giving unnecessary backstory, which is different

i do not care even a little abt whether people have experienced enough pain to legitimize their art, i care about the voice of the author and automating portions of the process means that voice is compromised

I watched Park Chan-Wook's miniseries The Sympathizer. Then I watched Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden's The Sympathizer, which I enjoyed less. Thought it was pretty good overall, though, especially at the points it felt least like an NYT bestseller. Would recommend

the thing that’s hardest to communicate about Jack Kirby is that if he had never produced anything after 1955 he would still be one of the all-time greatest and most important US comic book artists, as if Louis Jordan had transformed into James Brown halfway through his career.

Antoni Calonge (Spain), "La ciudad lavable" in El Víbora, 1984 (Spain)
A duotone comics page in black, shades of orange, and white, showing a twelve-panel grid of disconnected urban imagery, circling around the theme of a subway journey but interrupted by shots of apartment hallways or individual faces, with no figure appearing more than once. The art style is caricatured and expressionistic, with something of Harvey Kurtzman's loose gestural figure-making and something of Liberatore's meticulous finishes.

Widely celebrated at the time of its original release, Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s manga memoir A DRIFTING LIFE is a plodding, perplexing affair that not only refuses to contextualize the rest of Tatsumi’s body of work but feels like it belongs to a different corpus altogether. My latest, for TCJ:

Luiz Gê (Brazil), "Entradas e Bandeiras" in Chiclete com Banana, 1985 (Brazil)
A black-and-white comics page, showing giant statues of naked indigenous figures, led by a horseman and dragging massive stoneworks, making their way across a street while a car waits. The art style is solid and architectural in a near-brutalist fashion, with odd angles but a dispassionate distance.

Frank Salvatini & Alex Niño (USA/Philippines), "Hole in the Head" in Creepy, 1979 (USA)
A black-and-white comics page, yellowed with age. A psychiatric patient is given a sedative by a doctor, who removes his glasses to reveal that he is a monster like those who have been troubling his dreams. The borders of the panels resemble the bars of a prison cage, and the overall effect is extremely psychedelic.

Hanco Kolk (Netherlands), Meccano v1: Beauregard, 1992 (Netherlands)
A comics page with two small panels at the top and one huge panel at the bottom, showing a photographer in a tuxedo looking disapprovingly at the rowdy behavior surrounding him in a nightclub. The art style is wildly cartoony, even approaching Cubism in the way that the midcentury UPA aesthetic did, although the subject matter is extremely adult, including nudity, sex, drug use, violence, and death. The coloring is flat slabs of color applied over each other, also very Cubist, in shades of yellow, orange, and red.

Miguel Paiva (Brazil), Le terrible avventure di Donna X in Alter Alter, 1978 (Italy)
A full-page panel showing a savage battle in loosely-sketched black and white, over top of which a woman in a loincloth and flowy headscarf runs toward a man in glasses and a safari outfit; just as they reach each other, he is shot, and dies in her arms. The art style is faux-naive, with much greater care spent on composition than on anatomy or rendering.

What a depressing situation it would be if no “comics journalism” outlet could encourage let alone pay someone to closely read two books and related sources. What if we had to rely on a single person who happened to become interested in doing this. Just a hypothetical!
