Van Hecke & Senesi both very impressive on the ball today, both are in the Premier League top 5 CB's for progressive passes per 90 this season.

Tonali's best performance in a Tottenham shirt? His fitness stats also appear encouraging; he covered 11.9km against United, the 2nd highest figure from a Tottenham player this season (#1 is Solanke's 12.4km vs United).

Even with 10 men I was very impressed with our out of possession game today. Our 10 high turnovers is the highest from an opposition team at Old Trafford since Newcastle United's 12 in December 2025.

With the whole Tottenham stuff not really going to plan this season, it’s forced my hand into coming up with different types of content to produce.

A football related post that is not Manchester City related... I decided to use Expected Threat to measure who are the most impactful 'Super Subs' to bring on during non-winning game states: thespursstatman1.substack.com/p/are-we-abl...

Since the 2024-25 season Tottenham have spent 36.5% of Premier League minutes in a losing game state. 687 minutes more than any other team during this period.

Despite coming on in the 57th minute, Mateus Fernandes completed the joint most passes into the attacking 1/3 (5 with Marcos Senesi).

Something slightly different, but Iliman Ndiaye's performance against Man United got me looking into how we can measure the 'Unpredictability of Progressive Carries'. Link: thespursstatman1.substack.com/p/measuring-...

Think it’s always handy to have a forward available on the bench. We took Solanke off yesterday and then decided it was the time to put in crosses (no aerial threat with Tel, Kudus, Savinho, Maddison)

Either Savinho-Tel-Marmoush, or Kudus-Savinho-Marmoush

4. Kudus does really well to carry the ball into the attacking 1/3 and create some space, but again it felt like a forced pass into Mathys Tel.

TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
3. Under placed pass to Mathys Tel (not a major attack on, but just showed that this was not a one off).
110
TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
2. A good piece of play leaves Kudus driving into the attacking 1/3, but his pass to Savinho was slightly over hit, he then has to control it with his weaker right foot and check back inside (allows Everton defenders to come across and cover).
110
TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
1. A potential counter attack is prevented - Bergvall's place is misplaced behind Kudus, rather than allowing him to take it in his stride. Ball gets recycled and Everton are able to reset.

TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Was interested to re-watch Kudus' performance from yesterday. The 2nd half felt rather forced... There were a few examples where a better placed pass or bit more patience in the attacking 1/3 could have made the difference to us getting our much needed goal (Thread).

A lot of negativity following the game, but thought van Hecke was really solid. He has now made 45 progressive passes this season, the most of any Premier League player (van Dijk ranks 2nd with 44).

Lot of possession... Our 317 completed passes in the 1st half is just 4 less than what we completed in the whole of the Everton game back in May (321).

A sad and messy way to end for Richarlison, a player who: 1. finally was managing to stay fit and consistently available for the squad. 2. offered a different type of striker profile to Marmoush / Solanke. 3. was arguably our most important player last season.

Only 53% of Kinsky's passes against Forest were accurate. 76% of Kinsky's passes against Forest were 'long' (> 30 yards). vs Brentford this was 44% vs Newcastle this was 28%

You mentioned that Tonali played well. Was that more like what you expect to see from him and did you see over any improvements in his physical level? “I think he can play one step more, but he played the best game so far. Also, Gallagher played very well. Marmoush gives us the quality in the play”

More Tonali lack of fitness comments from De Zerbi yesteday... We have been out-ran by our opponents in all 3 Premier League games this season. For context under De Zerbi at the end of last season, we out-ran our opponents in 6/7 games.

Main worry is that he’s not played for so long, if we had Europa/Conference league would be much easier to ease him in, but the Prem is a lot more brutal these days

Spoke too soon... Mudryk anyone? Was an impressive ball carrier (don't know what he's like now)... Bit of a bonkers move to go for a player who hasn't played for close to 2 years, especially after De Zerbi's comments on Saturday about players with a lack of match fitness.

Only 2 games into the season, but it's already been quite evident that we are going to struggle aerially this season, so doesn't seem like the smartest move to lose your best aerial dual winner going into the last day of the transfer window.

Appears that Richarlison is on the way out, with Iliman Ndiaye coming in. He is a very impressive and versatile ball carrier, can operate on either wing. I would say Gakpo is a much more predictable ball carrier (but is very effective at getting shots away).

Performance wise, much more encouraging, really disappointing result as a result. Newcastle were clinical with their half chances, we weren't.

TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
For context, Gakpo makes 7.06 progressive carries per 90, Tel makes 6.49. The difference between the two is that Gakpo is very consistent with getting shots in after a carry (1.0 per 90) vs 0.7 per 90 for Tel
010
TheSpursStatsMan @spursplstatsman.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Rumours coming out today that Cody Gakpo is one of our leading transfer targets. Profile wise I personally think he is very similar to what we can be getting from Mathys Tel. Gakpo has very impressive number following progressive carries, but don't see the rationale behind spending £60M+ on him.
